ᐅ Does double-sided tape help prevent inserts from slipping in the KALLAX shelving unit?

aleagaHello everyone,
I have a question that has been on my mind for a while, and I hope to get some helpful experiences or tips here in the forum:
Does double-sided tape really help prevent inserts from sliding around in the KALLAX shelf?
I own several wooden and fabric inserts that I have placed in my KALLAX, but unfortunately, they tend to shift a bit whenever something is touched or moved. I am specifically interested in whether double-sided tape provides a permanent, reliable solution for better stability without causing visible damage to the shelf or the inserts.
Are there any recommendations on which type of tape holds particularly well without damaging the surfaces? And does anyone know of alternatives if the tape does not have the desired effect?
Thanks in advance for your opinions and experiences!

It’s great that you brought up this topic here! :-) I’ve tried exactly that and can tell you: yes, double-sided tape works really well to prevent the inserts from slipping in the KALLAX!
I used a strong adhesive tape from 3M that holds firmly without leaving any residue if you remove it later. Just attach a few strips inside the sides of the inserts and on the shelf, and nothing wobbles anymore.
I can confirm – after several months, everything is still fixed just like on day one. But you really need to pay attention to quality; cheap tape often doesn’t stick as well.
Give it a try, it’s really fun and instantly gives the shelf a professional look!

Genevieve25 Dec 2018 12:05Hello aleaga,
I would question the effectiveness of double-sided tape to some extent.
That may be true in some cases, but the durability largely depends on the materials and the load applied. Wood or fabric can react differently to adhesive tape, especially when moisture or temperature changes are involved.
Also, removing the tape can leave marks or cause damage, particularly on painted surfaces.
Furthermore, tape doesn’t necessarily help if the inserts have a mechanically poor fit. Perhaps a better-fitting solution with custom shelf inserts or rubber buffers would be a more sustainable option.
What is your usage situation? Are the inserts heavily loaded or used only lightly? That can make a difference.

Hi aleaga and everyone! 🙂
I’ve also experimented with double-sided tape in the KALLAX shelves, and I really like the idea. Sure, sometimes the inserts do shift a bit – but with the right tape, the whole setup feels noticeably more stable.
I can reassure you here: the tape stuck well for me, but when I removed it, there was no residue – it probably depends on the adhesive and how long it has been in place.
If you want something a bit more fun: lightly rubberized pads or self-adhesive felt feet can also reduce slipping, while protecting the drawer and the shelving unit.
In any case, I think it’s worth trying double-sided tape as an affordable and quick solution – and if it doesn’t work out, you still have alternatives at hand ;-)
Good luck!

Hello,
double-sided tape usually works well if the surfaces are clean and dry.
I would recommend choosing tape with a high tack level and pressing the inserts firmly for a short time.
Alternatively, small rubber or felt stoppers can help prevent slipping.
If you have heavy inserts, however, the tape may give way.
