Hello,

I’m curious about how you handle this:

When you enter the front door, depending on the design, the staircase to the upper floor or attic is located either to the left or right of the entrance. You come in wearing outdoor shoes and may walk a few meters before taking them off or placing them in the cloakroom area. Others in the house, wearing slippers, also walk along the same path from the entrance to reach the staircase to the upper floor or attic. How have you solved this, or is this just something you have to accept?

Thanks for your feedback!

Rearranging the staircase. It’s not necessarily required that, when entering the house, the staircase comes before the shoe storage area. I never understood that in the show homes I visited...
If it can’t be changed anymore, I would probably use some kind of dirt-trapping mat. And in winter, a plastic tray for wet shoes.

Arrange the staircase differently
Add an entrance vestibule in front that includes the coat storage and shoes
Take off shoes directly at the door, not at the coat rack

  • Rearrange staircase
  • Entrance vestibule
  • Recess doormat
  • Exterior view of a door threshold with a non-slip, striped rubber mat on gray tiles.
  • Remove shoes immediately

Quickly vacuum the entrance area once a day

This is also a major annoyance for me in our current apartment, so we planned it exactly as suggested here: a tiled entrance area with a coat closet, followed by the hallway with the stairs leading upstairs and the guest bathroom. This way, the entrance area can get a bit dirty, and you can still access the upstairs or the guest bathroom without having to walk through it.
