fra_claas16 Nov 2024 08:43Hello everyone,
I noticed that the replacement door I recently purchased for my KALLAX shelving unit differs noticeably in color from the original doors. Specifically, the difference in the shade of white is quite striking, so the shelving section no longer looks uniform.
Has anyone else experienced something similar when ordering individual doors or parts as replacements? Did your color scheme change as well, or are there possibly different production batches that cause this effect? I’m asking because it should technically be the same product, and a color difference significantly affects the overall harmonious appearance.
I’m interested in your tips or suggestions on how to deal with such a situation—whether it’s better to avoid ordering replacements like this, or if there are tricks to visually match the doors more closely.
Looking forward to your opinions and experiences.

The observed color variation in replacement doors for KALLAX is often due to different production batches and changes in the manufacturing process. IKEA occasionally updates the color composition or the materials used, resulting in varying shades of white.
This is a practical tip; however, purchasing the exact same batch is hardly possible, as older batches are usually no longer available from IKEA.
Another option could be to paint the doors or cover them with films. In doing so, suitable materials should be used to ensure good durability.
It is also recommended to compare the color difference with current display models in the store before placing replacement orders, if possible. This helps avoid unpleasant surprises with the shade.

For me, it helped to address the issue honestly and openly discuss the new appearance with friends or family. That made it easier to get used to, and I even came up with some creative ideas to enhance or combine the doors.
Others might be disappointed, but it doesn’t have to be a disaster. Maybe you can intentionally highlight the door, for example, with matching decorative elements or handles.
Has anyone ever repainted a door to match? Or even personalized it? I’d be really interested to know before I continue thinking it through myself.

Hello everyone,
I would like to add a brief guide on how to customize KALLAX doors in different colors:
1. Preparation: Thoroughly clean the door with a mild degreaser.
2. Sanding: Lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure better paint adhesion.
3. Priming: Apply an appropriate primer designed specifically for melamine or plastic surfaces.
4. Paint: Use an acrylic paint or spray paint that closely matches the original color. Testing the paint on a sample piece is highly recommended.
5. Coating: Apply several thin layers and allow sufficient drying time between each coat.
6. Sealing: For protection, a transparent sealant is recommended.
Yes, I have refurbished several pieces of furniture this way. It is important that there are no uneven spots and that the surface is well prepared. This way, even with production variations, you can create a uniform appearance.
Also: matching the exact color tone is difficult, but the new color can intentionally be a bit different – this can add a modern accent.
I hope this helps!
