Hello everyone,

I am planning to equip my kitchen with an IKEA Metod kitchen island, focusing on a customized design that offers plenty of storage space and an integrated seating area. I am particularly interested in how others have designed their Metod kitchen islands to be both functional and space-saving, without sacrificing a comfortable seating option for guests or family. What combinations of cabinet modules, worktops, and seating solutions (e.g., bar stools or built-in benches) have proven effective?

Additionally, it would be helpful to get tips on optimizing storage, especially in kitchens with limited space. What extras or interior fittings do you use to make the most of the storage capacity in a Metod island? I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Hey lige50,

first of all, great idea with the Metod island! 😎 I think the combination of pull-out and drawer units in the island works really well, especially because you can quickly access everything.

Regarding seating, I’ve had good experiences with bar stools – they’re flexible and can easily be moved away when not in use. Building a bench directly into the island looks elegant, but it’s usually quite fixed and can make the space feel cramped.

For storage, I like to use internal pull-outs and drawer organizers to keep everything tidy. And a wooden countertop adds warmth and invites you to linger. Good luck with your project – I’m looking forward to hearing how it turns out!

Interesting question, lige50.

You are asking about customizing an IKEA Metod kitchen island with storage and seating. First, I think it is important to clearly define the room size and intended use. What is often overlooked is ergonomics: How many people will regularly use the seating, and how much storage space is actually needed?

Regarding storage, my experience is that too many modules are often included, which ultimately restricts movement. It’s more about finding a balanced ratio.

Also, keep in mind that a fixed bench may look nice but often makes access to the storage underneath more difficult. Bar stools are more flexible but also take up more visual space.

IKEA offers several interior fittings that optimize storage, such as special inserts for cutlery, pots, or spices. My recommendation: When planning storage, measure carefully and plan systematically to avoid wasted space.

Since I have a Metod island myself, I can tell you the following:

- Drawers provide better storage than doors because you can see more at a glance.
- A seating area with bar stools saves space.
- A laminate countertop is durable and easy to maintain.

These elements work well together and are practical.
