Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Kallax shelving unit from Ikea and am considering covering the shelves with self-adhesive film. The main reasons are to protect the wood and to customize the appearance a bit.

My key question is: Does such a film coating really stay durable on the Kallax shelves?

I know the shelves are made of coated particleboard, but I’m unsure whether the film will stick well, especially if the unit is occasionally moved or subjected to light loads. Does anyone have experience with which types of film work best? Or are there issues like bubbles or peeling at the edges?

I’m also interested in whether any specific surface preparation is necessary before applying the film – for example, thorough cleaning, light sanding, or a primer.

Thanks in advance for your advice and assessments!

Hello,

basically, it is possible to cover the shelves of Kallax units with adhesive film – however, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure the result lasts and remains attractive over time.

As you mentioned, the shelves are coated with a melamine resin layer, which makes the surface smooth and quite durable. This generally helps the adhesion, as the film sticks well to it. However, dust or grease can easily reduce adhesion – so be sure to clean thoroughly first using a mild cleaner and alcohol.

Sanding is usually not necessary and can even be counterproductive, as it might damage the original coating that actually serves as the bonding base.

For the film, I would recommend high-quality, self-adhesive PVC or vinyl films specifically designed for furniture or interior surfaces. Cheaper films tend to peel off more quickly, especially at the edges.

You can largely avoid air bubbles by carefully applying the film slowly starting from one corner and smoothing it out with a squeegee or a plastic card.

If the unit is placed in warm or humid environments, make sure the film is suitable for such conditions.

Overall: yes, it will hold – but preparation and film quality are key. With heavy use or frequent movement of the shelves, corner lifting may appear over time. Sealing the edges of the film with a clear furniture adhesive can help.

I hope this helps you for now!

Exactly. I would clean both the film and the surface before applying it and then apply it carefully. If the film is of good quality, it will adhere very well.

Yes, it can happen at the edges if the film is stretched too tightly or the surface is not clean.

Hey, this topic is really exciting! 🙂 A few months ago, I tried the exact same thing and covered a Kallax with self-adhesive foil – and I can tell you: it works great if you keep a few important things in mind!

First: patience is your best friend! It’s worth thoroughly cleaning the surface; there must be no dust or grease residues. I simply cleaned it with rubbing alcohol and then let it dry well.

Second: use a warm environment, as the foil is much easier to apply and adheres better. I smoothed the foil piece by piece with a squeegee (available cheaply at hardware stores) to avoid bubbles.

Third: the edges! I carefully cut the foil with a craft knife and folded it over. A little furniture glue behind it then prevented it from peeling off again.

I was skeptical at first, but the result now looks really professional, and the foil has held firmly for months, even when I move the shelves.

So: definitely give it a try – it’s really brilliant if you want to give your Kallax a customized look! 🙂
