Hello,
I need your advice. We are searching for a plot of land, basically in only two towns. There are two building plots available, but my partner doesn’t like them. Otherwise, nothing. I recently saw a house with a large plot in an absolutely dream location and simply called the owners to ask if they would consider selling part of the land. Apparently, it already belongs to the daughters, but they said their mother, who still lives in the house (she is in her mid-80s), should decide.

The "problem" is that on the half of the land they want to sell, there is their prefabricated garage. The elderly lady said she isn’t really sure about it; she doesn’t want any hassle. They would need a new garage afterwards... I already told her not to worry about that.

Do you have any ideas on how I can convince her to sell to us? This is truly the last possible plot in the area and it would be so great if it works out.

Because of COVID-19, I thought of writing a letter with a photo of us, where I introduce ourselves. What do you think about that, and do you have any other ideas?

It just has to work.
Thanks and best regards

Yes, that’s a good idea even without Corona—given the recipient’s age, it’s definitely a better option than a video.

The "problem" is that her prefabricated garage stands on the half of the property that is for sale.

Well, at mid-80s she probably only has a few years left of driving ahead (and at the same time, those might be the years when she might feel a bit safer knowing a nice young family lives next door). I would consider the idea of leaving the garage where it is; that way, you already have a parking space on paper, and she can continue using the garage for her remaining years of driving.

Have you even checked if you are allowed to build there?

Thank you for the answers.

So, the garage would have to be removed, and you would build a new one. That is clear. Otherwise, the plot would be too small for construction.

Yes, I just checked again with the city. A new building would not be a problem.

Do you have any mutual acquaintances who might be able to support you?

Otherwise, I would still suggest developing plan B in parallel. What does your friend not like about the other plots of land?

How old is your garage and what does it look like? Could you improve on it with a better garage, perhaps better lighting, easier access, remote control opening, windows in the garage, or something similar?
