Hello!

We are currently planning our house, and fortunately, a landing staircase now fits into the floor plan.

We have switched from a steel substructure to concrete and are wondering which stair covering would be most suitable. With the steel staircase, our favorite was oak, but now there are many more options.

The hallway in front of the staircase on the ground floor will be tiled, as will the landing in front of the stairs. On the upper floor hallway, there will probably be vinyl flooring with an oak appearance.

What covering options are available? We only want to cover the treads and are now considering whether to use wood, wood-look tile, regular tile, exposed concrete, or vinyl. How does each floor covering affect the masonry handrail?

If tiled, is a finishing strip absolutely necessary? If I already have a "seamless" tread made from a tile, wouldn’t the strip be more of a nuisance?

The options really seem almost endless… thank you very much for your help!

We have a tiled floor and oak parquet on the carpentry-made platform staircase.

The risers are only filled and painted, but later treated with a protective coating called "Elefantenhaut," since they got dirty very quickly. We are satisfied with this and would do it the same way again.

@matte1987: Will a handrail be added there?

No, it is not planned. If we ever find ourselves needing it, such a thing can be installed quickly later on.

I would probably continue the flooring from the hallway. It doesn’t look good to have one type downstairs, a different one on the stairs, and yet another one upstairs. Unless the stairs are meant to be a feature or can be considered a unique design element.

We still don’t have a handrail in our stairwell and might add one later. I’m just wondering how that works in terms of safety.
