Hello everyone,
I am considering getting a compost bin for our two garden beds (carrots, strawberries, peas, tomatoes, cucumbers).
I am concerned about rats and mice. Is it possible to prevent them? How is it for those of you who have one? Do you have any tips for me?
Best regards

The plural of "Beet" is "Beete," not "Beets."
I have 5 compost heaps in the garden.
2 by the house for everything that starts in the kitchen.
2 for chicken manure.
1 for everything that comes from the vegetable bed (110 sqm (1,185 sq ft))—some of this also goes into the chicken manure heap.
No problems with rats.
Food scraps go to the chickens and are eaten by them, so they don’t end up in the compost.

Fummelbrett!1 Mar 2020 09:21Two years ago, we had a few rats making themselves at home in our nice, warm compost. They were probably attracted by the neighbor’s chicken feed and found a perfect place to live right next to us in the compost. Our compost only contains plant leftovers, thin branches, and vegetable peelings.
We then completely emptied the compost (a shame about the nice soil…) and modified it: Our compost is made of welded wire mesh panels, with compartments measuring 3 x 1 m² (10 x 3 ft²) placed side by side. We lined the bottom and sides with wire mesh and connected everything. Since then, we haven’t had any uninvited guests—I hope it stays that way in the future.

I have two thermal composters where I put all compostable material from the garden and kitchen. There are more or less mice inside (no rats). Every now and then, I leave the lids open for a while. The rest is managed by the neighbor's cat.

Do not put food scraps on it, I would clarify that to say no animal-based food scraps.
Salad leftovers and potato peels can be safely added.
However, the compost bin should still be placed a bit further away from the house.
