I am currently deciding whether to combine the standard wooden shelves of my new BILLY bookcase with glass shelves or to stick entirely with wood. The question is whether mixing glass and wood shelves in a BILLY bookcase looks visually inconsistent or if it actually enhances both the functionality and overall appearance. On one hand, I imagine that glass shelves make the unit look lighter and more elegant, but on the other hand, I worry that the different materials within one frame might create a somewhat unsettled look. I am also interested in whether there are any considerations regarding load-bearing capacity or practical use when choosing glass shelves instead of wooden ones. Does anyone have experience with how the combination of glass and wooden shelves in BILLY bookcases performs in everyday use? Are there design or practical aspects I should keep in mind? What recommendations would you give for a stylish and functional setup?

To be honest, I see this combination as potentially risky if not planned very carefully. Glass and wood give off different material vibes: wood conveys warmth and coziness, while glass feels cold and modern. The risk is that the shelf might appear visually inconsistent across the room and disrupt the existing order.

Regarding functionality, the load capacity of glass shelves can be an issue, especially if heavy books or decorations are placed on them. Glass is sturdy but not as strong or scratch-resistant as wood.

So, I would mainly ask: What will go on the shelves? Only decorations, or also really heavy books? And do you want the look to lean more modern or more traditional?

Glass and wood have different material vibes

This is a very important point. I would add that the quality and type of glass shelves also matter a lot—many of the BILLY glass shelves are made of tempered safety glass, which provides good stability.

However, you should not exceed the maximum load capacity: IKEA specifies a load limit of up to 15 kg (33 lbs) for BILLY glass shelves, while the wooden shelves usually support around 30 kg (66 lbs) or more. This makes a real difference in practice, especially if you want to store heavy books or binders.

Another technical aspect is the mounting: glass shelves usually have different brackets, and some users criticize these as being less sturdy or more flexible compared to those for wooden shelves. With heavy use and frequent removal and cleaning, this raises questions about durability.

Therefore, if you mainly use them for decoration or light items, glass shelves definitely offer visual benefits and contribute to brightness and elegance. For mixed use, you need to keep an eye on the load and usage.

What do you mainly want to store?

I am planning to mainly store non-fiction books in the shelf, with occasional decorative items. It should be primarily functional but not boring — I prefer clean lines with a touch of elegance.

That’s definitely a good point; I use my shelves daily and don’t want materials that wear out quickly.

Are there any specific material combinations that work well aesthetically? For example, delicate glass shelves only in the middle or near the top, to make the shelf appear lighter?

I really like how clearly you explained it, Imke8.

Overall, I can say that the combination of glass and wooden shelves in BILLY works really well if you make sure to create a balanced look. For example, it makes sense to choose glass shelves for areas that are not heavily loaded and should appear more open – such as the upper or middle sections, as you already mentioned.

Many people use glass shelves in the upper half so that the shelving unit appears lighter and the decoration stands out. The wooden shelves below then provide the necessary stability for heavy books.

Also important: make sure the colors of the wood shelves match. Combining the wrong wood finish with glass can quickly look inconsistent. White BILLY is quite versatile and goes very well with glass.

I can also confirm the durability aspect – glass shelves are easy to maintain but sensitive to impact. So, handling them with care is recommended. 🙂

As a supplement to the previous posts: In terms of stability, I can say that the load capacity of the glass shelves in IKEA BILLY is indeed a limiting factor. The wooden shelves are more stable and therefore better suited if you plan to store many heavy items.

Glass shelves are perfect if you mainly want to display lightweight objects or decorative items and care about an airy appearance. If you decide to mix them, I recommend using the glass shelves on only 1-2 levels. This way, you can create design highlights without overloading the entire unit.

Additionally, glass reflects light, which can be an advantage in darker rooms. Especially if your room doesn’t get much natural light, the shelf can appear brighter.

Glass shelves are also practical if you often wipe off dust with a damp cloth – this is easier than with wood, where you need to be careful with sensitive surfaces.
