Good evening,
I am currently considering the choice of an electric sectional door for the garage. The prefabricated garage will have a clear opening size of 2500 x 2000 mm (98 x 79 inches). The sectional door offered by the developer is priced at around 1,600 EUR after offsetting the cost of a manual sliding door. A typical sectional door from a home improvement store would cost about 600 EUR, plus installation I would be just over 1,000 EUR. A sectional door from Hörmann is available online for about 750 EUR without installation. Including installation, I estimate around 1,100 EUR.
Has anyone had experience installing a sectional door by themselves (without the developer)? Any tips would be appreciated.

There are surely providers online who offer steel frame gates plus installation in your area. A few weeks ago, I also looked out of curiosity at the cost of a double steel frame gate. I was considering doing the gate and the gate electronics myself. If you find a provider for around 1,000 euros (gate plus installation), you would save quite a bit and easily cover the cost of the electronics and the motor with that. I wouldn’t install it myself, as I’ve never done it before and you definitely need a few extra hands for that.
I feel confident installing it myself with the instructions, although I haven’t done it before. If necessary, I can always stop and have a professional take over. Today, I requested a quote for an Alulux sectional door. The size of 2500x2000 mm (98x79 inches) doesn’t seem to be a standard everywhere. If needed, I’ll equip the planned up-and-over door with a Hörmann operator and try it out that way first. If the up-and-over door turns out to be problematic, I can still purchase the sectional door without an operator later. In general, can the same operator from Hörmann be used for both a sectional door and an up-and-over door?
We installed two Hörmann sectional doors with openers. It’s not rocket science, but adjusting the emergency release afterwards was quite frustrating. However, our last installation was 10 years ago. Newer models are probably easier to set up.
I would install the sectional door right away instead of starting with a tilt door just because it seems simpler. That would be money poorly spent, as you’ll have to pay the price for a sectional door anyway later on.

Hello EveundGerd,
after further consideration, I have reached the same conclusion. I have now ordered the sectional door from the builder without the motor. I will purchase the motor later and install it myself. I assume that the door itself causes most of the installation difficulties. This way, I saved 650 EUR. The motor with rail is, as far as I know, a maximum of 400 EUR.
There are now powerful motors from Schellenberg available at home improvement stores that can also be operated via remote control or app. They cost roughly half the price of Hörmann. Has anyone had experience with them?
