Hello everyone, we are currently deciding whether to extend the house at my parents-in-law’s place. So far, we haven’t involved an architect because we first want to consider how it could potentially look.

I’m attaching the current layout of the apartment.

What is important:

- The main entrance and stairwell must be shared by both households.
- Separate living area (currently, everything is very open plan)
- 2 children’s bedrooms
- Bathroom, guest toilet
- Bedroom
- Open living and dining area. Balcony and garden should be accessible from the living and dining area.
- Storage room

I have made a rough draft myself as a layperson. It already includes quite a bit of hallway.

I would really appreciate any further ideas.

Best regards,
Michaela

I think I'm too tired for this thread,
I am too, actually. But it’s quite obvious.
No extension can be built at the top of the plan, as there appears to be only 5 meters (16 feet) of plot available there.
Unfortunately, my software can’t display yellow and red walls, so only the extension on the right side of the plan is extended by about one meter (3 feet), with interior walls moved accordingly.
On the left side of the plan, I have additionally marked the new walls in red.

Good morning, thank you very much for your draft. That would be a great alternative if the extension is dropped for cost reasons. However, there is space for the extension at the top of the plan. A few years ago, a green area was acquired there. This is not shown in the plans. Maybe you have another idea including an extension? It would be nice if it were possible to access the garden from the extension so that a terrace could be created there. At the same time, it would also be good to access the balcony from the living area. Please keep in mind that an extension would only be possible roughly from the old kitchen area onwards, as at the top of the plan near the dining room there is still a spiral staircase from the parents-in-law’s apartment leading to the garden. Calculate with around 150k. Is that approximately a 30m² (320 ft²) extension?

Yes, about 30 m2 (320 sq ft). How do you arrive at this amount? Regards

I calculated 30 times 4000 euros, plus an additional 30,000 euros for the renovation inside the house.
