ᐅ Ceiling outlet with wiring for recessed spotlights as a DIY project?

lesmue79First of all, I’m not an electrical or drywall professional, but I’m not completely unskillful either.
Right now, the prices charged by the prefab home electrician for ceiling spotlights are a bit frustrating (just drilling the hole costs 40€ net) on top of the cost for the actual spotlight/fixture. So I’m considering whether I should simply order ceiling outlets, meaning I have cables coming out of the ceiling and then drill the holes myself. Inside the house, it would be a 68mm (approximately 2.7 inches) hole through Fermacell, and outside, a corresponding hole through the cladded roof overhang. Or is this hassle not worth it?

Clearly, I don’t see the point in paying an extra €40 for a hole with a diameter of 68mm (2.7 inches), plus another amount for the actual lamp... I was thinking either I remove the Fermacell board from the ceiling again, drill the hole, and then screw everything back in place, or I shorten the cable coming from the ceiling enough so that I can carefully drill the hole with the hole saw without damaging the cable. If necessary, I would then slightly extend the cable again.
40€ is still quite affordable. I was completely shocked when he quoted his prices. I then told the construction company to cut out the electrician, and that I would handle it myself.
A 68mm (2.7 inch) hole is about 90% accurate. There are smaller and larger sizes as well, but you can’t really go wrong with 68mm (2.7 inches). I would recommend checking Amazon first and ordering a few to test, or visiting a lighting supplier.
If you just want to save yourself the trouble of drilling the hole, you can do it that way. The question is whether he will agree to that. That’s basically how they make their money... The amount charged by prefab home providers for electrical installation is basically negligible.
Otherwise, you can easily do it afterward. At least a conduit should be installed on the outside.
This is definitely not rocket science, and even someone with two left hands can probably find the center of a room or measure out an equal distance along a house façade.

Now I’m curious. For the next construction cost summary, I have listed the creation of the 68mm (2.7 inches) holes as well as the delivery and installation of the ceiling spotlights as customer-provided. I’m looking forward to the response. This way, I remain the most flexible and can still decide whether the connection will be recessed ceiling-mounted or surface-mounted.
