Sorry if this thread is totally off-topic, but I couldn’t find a suitable category.

Quick question: Can a carport be built without a bitumen roof covering, or is that completely unreasonable?
Does it have any long-term disadvantages? Will the roof rot without bitumen? Or are the wooden roof boards enough?

The durability will definitely suffer if the boards are exposed to rain without protection. Additionally, it is doubtful that the roof is waterproof...

In general, bitumen is not mandatory. However, it depends on the overall design of the carport roof.

We are currently considering whether a roof made of multiwall sheets (a translucent material) would be suitable for the carport. These panels obviously need to be break- and impact-resistant. Naturally, no bitumen layer would be applied in this case.

My sister’s neighbor covered a 40m² (430 sq ft) terrace about a year ago and has been very satisfied with it so far. I plan to talk to him about it next week—let’s see what comes of it.

We simply glued pond liner onto the wooden garage. We had some left over. No idea if this is cheaper and equally effective, but it has held up for a year now,...

We built our carport ourselves using multiwall polycarbonate sheets. We had some left over, so we decided to build a small conservatory ourselves as well. It wasn't that difficult to build, and the materials were not expensive. For example, I don’t like wood on a carport, as it’s just not to my taste. You always have to repaint and protect the wood over time.
