Hello everyone, I am planning to buy some furniture from the IKEA Brimnes series but already have other pieces in the living room that are not from this series. My question is: Can IKEA Brimnes furniture be combined with other furniture without causing visual or functional issues? I am especially wondering if the designs or materials are coordinated well enough to work together, and if there are usually any challenges with color tones or dimensions. I look forward to your opinions and experiences.

Basically, combining IKEA Brimnes furniture with other pieces is quite doable if you keep a few things in mind. The Brimnes series features a rather classic, straightforward style, with white surfaces and some frosted glass elements. When it comes to color matching, white is naturally an advantage because it appears quite neutral. However, you should pay close attention to the shades: the white in Brimnes is often a slightly warm white, which can look different from cooler white tones of other furniture.

Regarding dimensions, Brimnes furniture is standardized and relatively compact, making integration easier as it fits well into small to medium-sized rooms. A potential challenge might arise if your other furniture is much bulkier or made from different materials, such as dark wood. In that case, using connecting elements like matching decorations or a rug that ties the two styles together is recommended.

To assist you better: which specific furniture pieces do you want to combine, and in which room will the combination take place?

Thank you for the detailed response! Most of the other furniture I already have is made of oiled oak and has a rather rustic style, such as a sideboard and a coffee table. The living room is about 20 square meters (215 square feet) in size, featuring mostly modern, clean lines, but the wooden furniture gives it a cozy and warm feel. I’m wondering whether the white Brimnes pieces could connect the rustic elements with the modern style or if that might create a clash.

The combination of white IKEA Brimnes furniture with rustic oak pieces is generally feasible if the contrasting styles are used deliberately. White brightens the appearance, which creates a greater sense of space especially in smaller rooms, while wood adds warmth and character. It is important that the shades complement each other and that the materials do not clash visually.

My advice is to choose white tones as close as possible to those of Brimnes and to introduce color accents through textiles or decorations in warm natural hues to create a harmonious connection with the oak. It is also advisable to pay attention to uniform lines in the furniture design so that the stylistic contrast does not become too dominant.

I would like to point out that combining Ikea Brimnes furniture with other pieces requires more than just looking at the color shade. Design, proportions, and functionality also need to be considered.

That is true, but it can also happen that too many different styles break up the overall look if no connecting elements are created. In particular, with rustic furniture made of wood with a pronounced grain, switching to smooth, painted white surfaces can appear quite harsh if no ways are found to soften this harmoniously.

It would be interesting to know exactly which furniture is being combined to assess the potential degree of style contrast.

I understand that it’s about more than just the color. My coffee table has a very distinct grain, and the sideboard has a matte finish, less smooth than the Brimnes furniture. The sofa is neutral and rather minimalist. My main goal is for the Brimnes cabinet units not to stand out as foreign objects but to blend in without having to replace the other furniture. What could help create this visual connection?
