ᐅ Is it possible to change the colors of IKEA PLATSA units myself?

Hello everyone, I am planning to get an Ikea Platsa cabinet system but I’m unsure about one thing: Is it possible to change the colors of individual elements in the Ikea PLATSA system, meaning can you swap out the fronts or other colored parts afterward or repaint them? I’m especially interested in the options for flexibly adjusting the system’s colors without having to buy completely new parts. Does anyone have experience with whether this is practical at all and which parts might be better suited for this? Thanks in advance for your insights!

As a supplement: Ikea Platsa fronts are usually made from particleboard with a melamine foil surface. This surface is smooth and difficult to paint without special pretreatment. For self-painting, sanding the surface with sandpaper (grit 180-220) and applying an adhesion-promoting primer are necessary.

The modular fronts can be easily replaced, making a color change technically simpler by purchasing other fronts. Replacement fronts are relatively affordable, which is significant compared to the effort required for painting them yourself.

When it comes to color variations, original Ikea fronts or suitable alternative surfaces from a carpenter or external films are recommended. Painting them yourself requires precision and is not necessarily a quick DIY task.

I once had a PLATSA system where I replaced the fronts – and it’s really fun to change the colors depending on your mood! 😊

That sounds great and inspiring! I’ve felt similarly myself and have considered painting before. But the concern that it might not turn out well or that the surface wouldn’t hold has held me back so far. Thanks for sharing your experience – stories like this really help encourage others to give it a try. Sometimes just experimenting is the best approach.

The following points can be summarized:
- PLATSA fronts are modular and can be replaced at any time.
- Painting them yourself requires preparation: sanding (to remove the melamine coating), priming, and suitable paints.
- The durability of paint on melamine-coated surfaces is questionable without proper preparation.
- Original replacement parts from Ikea offer an affordable and simple alternative to changing the color.

My advice: If you plan to change the color regularly or frequently, it is worthwhile to purchase several front variants. For single projects, careful painting with proper preparation can work but is labor-intensive.

Absolutely right! I would add that if you choose the DIY route, keep in mind that while you can make things look nice with fun color experiments, it can also get frustrating without the proper tools and materials. So, it’s better to start with good-quality materials – that way it’s enjoyable and the finish lasts!
