Hello,

a typical beginner’s question, but before I make a mistake...

How do I calculate the roof height based on a floor plan? Let’s say I have 9 x 11 meters (30 x 36 feet) and I’m planning a hip roof / pyramid roof. Now I want to experiment a bit with the pitch angles and compare the effects on the roof height.

Similarly, I want to change the floor plan to 8 x 13 meters (26 x 43 feet) and experiment with the angles. Somehow, I’m missing the starting point to calculate the correct roof heights.

Can someone give me a nudge in the right direction?

Just consider the side view in two dimensions and then recall your geometry from around 7th grade, triangle calculations. Cosine, sine, tangent, and the Pythagorean theorem. Hypotenuse, adjacent side, etc.

Or look for triangle calculators online.

Thanks. Then I'll go ahead and use the set square. I missed the tip about the cross-section/side view (couldn't see the forest for the trees and all that…).
