Hello everyone,

I am considering outfitting my kitchen with an IKEA Metod kitchen island that not only offers plenty of storage but also includes seating—basically a combination of work surface, storage, and a cozy dining area. My question is whether anyone has experience building such a kitchen island themselves, especially using IKEA Metod modules.

I’m interested in aspects such as the optimal selection of base cabinets, design options for seating areas (e.g., integrated bench or bar stool solution), and the challenge of making the island both stable and practical.

Additionally, I would like to know how you have organized the storage efficiently to ensure it is truly functional without appearing cluttered.

In short: How can you build a custom IKEA Metod kitchen island with seating and plenty of storage yourself so that it is both visually appealing and practical? I appreciate any tips, experiences, or design suggestions!

Hey, I would recommend using deep drawers at the bottom when combining storage and seating. They are great for large pots and pans.

For the seating area, standard bar stools are usually sufficient, which can easily be pushed under the countertop when not in use. This keeps the island flexible. You can ensure stability with sturdy frame constructions under the cabinets.

Oh yes, I can definitely share my thoughts on that! 😄 Metod is like a modular system for your home – very flexible, especially if you want to combine smart storage solutions with seating.

I incorporated a bench seating solution into my island and found it great that the countertop can be adjusted to have enough overhang for your knees. This way, you can sit comfortably without feeling cramped.

A tip: use drawers of different heights for storage, so you can neatly organize both large cookware and small kitchen utensils. Also, don’t underestimate the value of generous work surfaces when the island needs to be multifunctional. 🍳

That's true, but if you prefer a cozy lounge vibe rather than a typical bar look, a built-in bench is really comfortable.

I once made an island for a friend using a modified Metod base frame, so you basically sit on drawers. This saves space and provides storage for pots and pantry items.

Important here: Stability through solid joints, ideally with concealed screws and good dowels. And hey, a matte finish on the countertop looks great too! 😉

For the practical implementation of a Metod kitchen island with seating and plenty of storage space, I especially recommend the following points:

- Structural planning: The countertop with seating overhang requires sturdy supports, especially when seating is integrated on the sides.
- Module selection: A combination of base cabinets with varying drawer heights and shelves to use storage space efficiently.
- Seating solution: Either install a built-in bench with padded elements or use bar stools that can fit under the overhanging countertop.
- Materials: For the countertop, a durable material is recommended that also creates a warm visual atmosphere.

It is also important to level all IKEA modules properly and secure them with additional braces to prevent damage or warping.

Leveling is important, yes, but honestly: these prefabricated modules are often nothing more than a compromise between price and durability. If you really want to combine storage space and seating comfort, you might want to consider custom-made alternatives.

The idea of designing everything yourself sounds appealing, but it quickly comes at the expense of ergonomics and longevity – even if IKEA is involved.

A DIY project is always nice, but you shouldn’t forget that kitchen islands are used daily and need to withstand a lot. That should not be underestimated.
