Hello everyone, I am considering extending my Billy shelf with custom accessories but do not want to use ready-made solutions; instead, I want to build something myself. Specifically, I am looking for ideas and a practical guide on how to create additional shelves, drawers, or organizer units tailored to fit, without negatively affecting the shelf’s stability or appearance. Are there proven methods regarding which materials and tools work best? Also, how close can you get to the existing drill holes or joints without damaging the shelf? I look forward to your tips, experiences, and, if possible, step-by-step instructions.

If you want to add extra drawers, solid beech wood runners or metal ball-bearing slides are recommended. While this is a common solution, you should consider that DIY drawers often have more play or looseness. Metal slides clearly have the advantage in ensuring smooth operation and durability. Also, I wonder whether the material thickness of the panels used can withstand the lateral stress over time, especially when integrated into the holes of the BILLY shelf. It’s worth checking this load capacity in advance to avoid deformation.theo63 schrieb:
Material thickness of the panels used that can withstand lateral loads in the long term Therefore, I recommend using at least 15 mm (0.6 inch) high-density multiplex plywood, optionally coated. For drawers on metal slides, a minimum panel thickness of 12 mm (0.5 inch) is necessary to securely fasten screws and guide elements. At the same time, when installing additional parts, care should be taken not to weaken any of the original BILLY support structures. Using shelving rails with a high load capacity (at least 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf) is also advisable to ensure safety.Similar topics
