Hello everyone, I am considering extending my Billy shelf with custom accessories but do not want to use ready-made solutions; instead, I want to build something myself. Specifically, I am looking for ideas and a practical guide on how to create additional shelves, drawers, or organizer units tailored to fit, without negatively affecting the shelf’s stability or appearance. Are there proven methods regarding which materials and tools work best? Also, how close can you get to the existing drill holes or joints without damaging the shelf? I look forward to your tips, experiences, and, if possible, step-by-step instructions.

Hello Elpontus, for self-made BILLY accessories, I initially recommend using plywood or MDF for shelves, as these materials are stable and easy to work with. It is important not to exceed the load capacity; for example, the original BILLY shelves support about 25 kg (55 lbs). If you want to add extra drawers, solid beech wood rails or metal ball-bearing guides are advisable. You should avoid enlarging the drill holes in the cabinet body if possible; instead, use existing holes or attach additional brackets externally to prevent stability issues. For easy assembly, wooden dowels and glue can also be used to ensure a clean surface. In terms of tools, a cordless screwdriver, drill, router (for precise edges), and possibly a jigsaw are sufficient. Feel free to ask if you want more details.

I would recommend using the original metal shelf brackets and cutting your own wooden shelves. For drawers, rails from a hardware store work well. Just use screws that are not too long, otherwise the wood might split.

That’s brilliant, customizing a BILLY shelf yourself! 🙂 I built small boxes that I simply slide into the compartments. They hold perfectly and provide plenty of space for small items! It looks really stylish if you add some paint or paper on the outside. Go ahead, try building something yourself!

Hello Elpontus, I would like to give you a step-by-step guide on how to build an additional drawer box, for example, under a BILLY shelf: 1. Take precise measurements (internal width/depth/height). 2. Have a 15 mm (0.6 inch) plywood board cut to size. 3. Connect the side panels using wooden dowels or screws. 4. Glue in or screw on simple metal drawer slides. 5. Design the front panel to fit and file a small grip recess at the bottom or attach a handle. 6. Smooth the interior with sandpaper and optionally paint or varnish it. 7. Place it into the shelf and check for stability. It is important to continue using the existing shelf holes for the shelf supports to avoid weakening the main shelf unit. If you like, I can also provide tips on tools and where to buy materials.

I often use simple MDF boards for floors, which I cut to size. For drawers, I recommend drawer slides from the furniture hardware range, as they allow for clean installation.
