Hello,
I moved into my new apartment two months ago, on the third floor of an older building. Unfortunately, I only noticed after moving in that my small bedroom has several light, whitish-yellowish stains on the ceiling, which appear very damp. These stains are also found in larger numbers at various spots on two walls.

The caretaker’s stand-in said he doesn’t think the stains are mold because, in his experience, mold usually only appears in corners. However, he couldn’t tell me what the stains might be, so I’m still not really reassured.

Regarding the room, I can only say that it’s difficult to ventilate properly as it is around a corner. When I moved in, I noticed quite a bit of condensation on the windows. The stains do not appear near the floor but relatively high up under the ceiling, though not necessarily in corners. They are found almost exclusively on two walls in this one room—one wall borders the neighboring apartment, the other the living room, but there are no stains visible in the living room. I’m not sure if this is relevant, but the caretaker’s stand-in also mentioned that there is a bricked-up former chimney in the room (the area adjoining both affected walls). The room was also poorly painted by the previous tenant—some spots were just overpainted, so it looks patchy overall. This applies to the entire apartment, but the stains are found only in this one room.

Does anyone have any ideas or advice?

Thank you
Ayelet

Can you make a rough sketch of the room, including windows, doors, radiators, adjacent rooms, and exterior walls?

Ultimately, the goal is to determine whether there are any surfaces where moist air could condense.
