Hello everyone,
I recently assembled a Billy shelf from IKEA, but unfortunately, it is slightly crooked – it wobbles a bit even though I made sure to place it on a level floor. I suspect that either the assembly or the points where it contacts the floor don’t fit perfectly, or perhaps the adjustable feet are not set correctly.
My question is: What exact steps should I take to properly align this shelf? Are there recommended techniques or tools that work best for this? And how can I ensure that the shelf remains stable over time without becoming crooked again?
I would appreciate a detailed guide, including any common mistakes to watch out for with this model. Thanks in advance!

To complement the previous information and clarify the situation objectively:
The BILLY shelves have adjustable leveling feet that allow fine height adjustment of ±5 mm (±0.2 inches). This is a standard tolerance already considered during the design phase.
- Use a good measuring tool, preferably a digital spirit level or a precise mechanical one, to align both horizontally and vertically.
- The correct adjustment of the feet should be done before securely fastening the shelf to the wall.
- On uneven floors, avoid makeshift shimming with random materials, as this may compromise stability in the long term. Instead, use furniture-specific shims or rubber pads that distribute pressure and prevent slipping.
In addition, the wall mounting should be carried out according to the provided instructions. This ensures a horizontal position and prevents tipping, especially with taller shelves.
If, after following all steps, the shelf is still uneven, there may be a defect or warping in the frame, which would justify a replacement.
This factual and methodical approach ensures a complete resolution of the issue.

Hey Gejerry and everyone else,
I really like this thread – it sounds so simple, but a crooked BILLY shelf is actually a hidden source of tension in the living room! 😉
I know that feeling too – you almost want to grab the hammer, but then a steady hand and a little patience bring the victory.
My personal tip: If the shelf is uneven, just slide a small rubber pad from the hardware store under one foot, and it will stand firm – almost like a tiny volcano sensing the floor. 🙂
And remember: The shelf loves being screwed to the wall – that makes it much more stable. Then you can even slide it a bit while cleaning, and it won’t collapse.
So, better spend a few minutes with the spirit level than dealing with a wobbly shelf that scares you when you walk by.

I remember having a similarly crooked shelf and getting really frustrated at first.

Hello everyone,
I would like to emphasize once again that securing BILLY shelves to the wall is not just a recommendation but a safety measure. Especially in households with children or pets, an unstable shelf can quickly become dangerous.
Regarding the leveling feet: It is important that they are not just loosely inserted into the holes during installation. The feet can be rotated to adjust the height, but sometimes the problem is that they are not tightened enough, causing them to slip or shift downward.
Here is my recommendation:
- After adjustment, check and tighten all screws and leveling feet again.
- Use a spirit level for horizontal alignment.
- Use rubber pads or furniture shims if the floor is permanently uneven.
Finally, if the shelf remains crooked despite all measures, there could be a manufacturing defect. In that case, do not hesitate to contact the retailer or exchange the shelf.
Good luck!

BILLY shelves should always be attached to the wall. This greatly increases stability and prevents tipping.
