Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a BILLY shelf from IKEA but unfortunately lost the entire set of screws and fasteners that were supposed to come with the furniture. This means all the connecting elements are missing – from dowels, screws, large connector bolts to the tightening keys.

My question is: What is the quickest and most cost-effective way to solve this problem? I want to avoid having to buy a whole new shelf, especially since the assembly otherwise went well. Are there official spare part sources from IKEA or other suppliers, maybe compatible screw sets from third-party providers?

Also, what is the best approach if I no longer know the exact screw sizes and types? Is it worth going directly to IKEA, or is an online inquiry sufficient? And what experiences do you have with lost or missing screws for BILLY or similar shelves?

I look forward to your tips and advice – preferably with some concrete recommendations on how to safely reassemble the shelf. Thanks in advance!

Oh no, that’s really frustrating! But don’t worry – IKEA is usually quite accommodating with issues like this.

I would recommend contacting IKEA directly first. They often have replacement part kits, especially for classics like the BILLY shelf. Usually, you can order them online or, with some luck, pick them up in-store. Visiting the store can also be helpful because you can check if the screws match the quality you need.

If that doesn’t work out, hardware stores often carry screw sets specifically for furniture assembly, but you need to pay close attention to the sizes (often 5mm (0.2 inches) connector bolts, matching dowels, etc.). It’s best to measure the holes or any remaining screws if you have one. Using a ruler or caliper usually works well for this.

And don’t worry, losing parts like this happens quite often – you’re definitely not alone! 🙂

Good luck, and please feel free to share how it goes!

That is generally true, but I would like to clarify a few details to avoid misunderstandings.

BILLY shelves typically use so-called cam connectors with the matching dowel, connector bolt, and small Phillips screws. These are standardized but can vary slightly depending on the production year or minor model variations (e.g., screw length, material thickness).

My first tip: If you still have one of the screws or connectors from the set, try to measure it precisely—the diameter and length are crucial for finding replacement parts. If that’s not possible, I recommend contacting IKEA customer service and having the exact model number of the shelf ready; this increases the chances that they can send you the correct replacement part set or at least a part number.

As a third step—and if you are comfortable with DIY—you could visit a well-stocked hardware store or specialist fastener supplier. The staff there can often help quite well by examining a sample piece and assembling suitable sets.

One more note: If you decide to use third-party parts, please make sure the screw quality is adequate! Cheap sets often cause long-term issues with durability or even damage to the material.

If you like, feel free to share more details about the shelf type or the approximate purchase date, and I can assist you more specifically.

To add to the previous answers:

IKEA itself offers a spare parts service accessible through their website. There you can often order very specific replacement parts for their classic furniture like BILLY. The prerequisite is that you have the product number or as precise a model description as possible.

The typical screw sets for BILLY shelves consist of:
- 6 mm and 5 mm dowels (usually plastic)
- 30 mm connector bolts with metric threads
- Phillips head screws (about 15–20 mm (0.6–0.8 inches) long)

Alternatively, some screw manufacturers and online shops offer replacement “furniture repair kits” that are compatible. However, these vary widely in quality and fit.

In any case, I recommend the following approach:
1. Check if you still have individual parts from a previous set, bring these along (optionally measure them).
2. Use IKEA’s online spare parts service and order preferably from there.
3. If IKEA cannot help, buy screws and dowels at a local hardware store that match the dimensions (dimensions can be researched online).

Avoid cheap sets without exact measurements. Incorrect fasteners can cause instability, which can quickly become dangerous for shelves.

If needed, I can also provide links to IKEA spare parts pages or reputable shops.
