Hello everyone,

I am about to assemble my BILLY shelf and am wondering whether it is better to attach it to the wall using screws or wall anchors. My wall is made of solid brick, not drywall. I am unsure which fastening method is more stable in the long term while also being as easy as possible to install.

I am also interested in whether the choice between screws and wall anchors affects load capacity or safety. Are there any differences regarding disassembly or reusability?

I look forward to your opinions and experiences on the advantages and disadvantages of screws versus wall anchors, especially for mounting the BILLY shelf.

Thanks in advance!

whether the extra effort for heavy-duty anchors is really worth it for BILLY shelves

In short: For standard shelves and normal wall loads, high-quality plastic anchors are usually sufficient.

Heavy-duty anchors are more appropriate for heavy loads, for example if you plan to attach additional weights or heavier structures to the shelf. For concrete or steel walls, the recommended type of anchor depends on the wall material (metal expansion anchors, chemical anchors).

For brick walls, typical nylon or universal anchors are adequate for a BILLY shelf, as long as the holes are drilled cleanly and the anchors fit properly.

I would add: the quality of the anchors is crucial, not just the type.

Cheap anchors lose their grip quickly and can break, especially in brick. High-quality branded products provide reliable hold.

So it’s better to invest a bit more and focus on quality. This also makes disassembly easier because the anchor doesn’t crumble inside the hole.

Let me humorously touch on this: Screws without anchors are like water without a bottom – they barely hold. When assembling the BILLY shelf, you should always rely on the combination.

Anchors provide the stable foundation, while screws are the handle that everything hangs from. It can actually be satisfying to feel like you’ve found the perfect way to ensure maximum hold. 😉

In short: The clear winner here is anchors plus screws, especially in solid masonry. With proper installation, you’ll get a stable and safe setup using both.
