Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble my Billy shelf, but I am currently facing the challenge of finding the optimal order of assembly—especially regarding the combination of the side panels, shelves, and back panels.

The enclosed instructions do describe the sequence, but I find it a bit unclear and somewhat awkward, particularly if you want to assemble the shelf without using clamps. Is there perhaps a simpler method or a proven workflow that makes the assembly more efficient and stable?

I look forward to your tips and experiences, especially on how you handle the order of the individual components and whether a different approach has worked better.

Good morning everyone,

to quickly cover the basics: The Billy shelf is a classic plug-and-screw system that gets a type of cross-bracing from the back panel. The back panel is what really makes the shelf stable, so it’s very important to attach it only after all the shelves are properly secured.

Also, I generally recommend checking all parts for damage or manufacturing defects before assembly. This will save you frustration during the build.

And: Take your time with each step – don’t rush, or you might end up with a shelf panel not fitting correctly.

Good luck to everyone who still has to assemble the shelf!

One quick tip: Insert the anchor properly into the hole and avoid using too much force. Otherwise, the wood may split or the fitting may sit crookedly.

That explains a lot for me, thank you! The order seems especially important: sides → shelves → back panel. Would it make sense to loosely tack the back panel in place before inserting all the shelves? Or would that be counterproductive, since the wood might not yet be dimensionally stable?

This was a bit of a stumbling block for me, as I was wondering whether a partial installation of the back panel to stabilize the unit before adding the shelves could help.

Usually not. The back panel is designed to stabilize the entire shelving unit once it is fully assembled. If it is fixed before the shelves are in place, it can make inserting the shelves more difficult and may cause the frame to warp. It is better to attach the back panel only after all the shelves are properly positioned.

I think that with a bit of music playing in the background and the right approach, assembling the furniture is really fun! :-)

A little tip from me: using some handy tools like a rubber mallet and a spirit level app on your phone makes everything go much faster and much more relaxed.

And don’t worry, it won’t end up crooked. In the end, your BILLY shelf will look perfect – otherwise, that would be quite the drama 😂

Haha, @Katan, exactly! And once the shelf is up, the pride is huge!

One more little tip: Before assembling, you can sort all the screws and wall plugs and put them into small bowls – this saves time searching and makes the assembly process much more enjoyable. Fun fact: That’s how I managed to put together my BILLY in 45 minutes instead of two hours ;-)
