Especially with shelves that you assemble individually, there are often small pitfalls, particularly when it comes to alignment and inserting dowels and screws. I would like to know which steps you have optimized, if there are any tools that have proven especially useful, or perhaps a special trick to make the whole process more stable without the usual frustration. I have read the instructions several times, but often the tips from the community are more practical and quicker to apply. Looking forward to your experiences and recommendations!
Hey Finnleyn39, great topic! 🙂 My tip is to pre-drill the holes for the dowels with a small wood drill bit before assembling. This way, the parts fit much tighter later on, and you save frustration by not having to hammer too hard. Also, I got a small rubber mallet, which is gentler on the material and much more pleasant to use than a metal hammer.
The rubber mallet is really a game changer 😉
And one more tip: Before screwing everything together, you can loosely assemble all the parts to check if everything fits. This saves you some readjustments after everything is fixed and something doesn’t quite line up. Good luck with your build!

I would like to share some systematic tips for assembling the BILLY shelf, as experience shows that well-organized steps greatly help prevent the most common mistakes.
1. Preparation: Lay out all parts sorted on the floor so you can identify any missing components early.
2. Tools: A cordless drill with adjustable torque is highly recommended to avoid over-tightened screws and damaged panels.
3. Correct positioning of dowels: Mark the spots lightly with a pencil before drilling, so you don’t work blindly.
4. Screwing process: Initially tighten the screws only lightly—secure the parts first before fully tightening.
This advice is very important and often saves a lot of time, as misassemblies otherwise tend to be noticed too late.
Finally: Always fix the shelves to the wall—the BILLY shelf is unfortunately not completely stable without wall mounting.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

Guys, I have to say, BILLY is really great, but I’ve discovered a really cool trick to save time and even have some fun during assembly!
✔ Exactly! I even pre-sorted the screws with a small bit set, which made the whole process super smooth.
And here’s the best part: when you later install the shelves, grease the small holders with a bit of petroleum jelly. This makes them slide in and out really easily — in case you want to rearrange them. I was surprised myself how much time this saves when dealing with multiple shelves and you don’t have to worry about taking them apart!
I’m always happy to share these hacks so that the DIY experience doesn’t turn into frustration but becomes genuinely enjoyable. Good luck, and feel free to ask if you want more tips! 🙂
