ᐅ BILLY Shelf Assembly Aids from Hardware Stores – Helpful or Not?

MiranonHello everyone, I recently bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA and am wondering whether the assembly aids that you can buy separately at hardware stores are really useful or rather unnecessary. Specifically, I’m referring to the various devices for precise alignment of the shelves and for securing the side panels that some stores offer as accessories.
I find the idea of using such tools interesting to make the assembly easier and more accurate, especially if you’re not very experienced in furniture assembly. On the other hand, the Billy bookcase seems quite straightforward to put together even without these aids, so I’m unsure if the effort and cost for these tools are really worth it.
Does anyone have experience with whether these assembly tricks from hardware stores actually pay off? Or is it better to simply follow the instructions and plan for more time? Thanks in advance for your insights!

Hello Miranon, thank you for your well-formulated question.
From my experience as someone who has assembled BILLY bookshelves many times, I can say that the assembly aids available at hardware stores are usually a nice addition but not absolutely necessary. What matters more is a steady hand, a good cordless drill, and carefully following the IKEA instructions.
The biggest advantage of these aids is that they help keep the shelves perfectly level and secure the furniture more firmly, which is especially useful when assembling several units in a row and aiming for consistent results.
If you are building the shelf just for personal use and are not a professional, you can probably do without them. However, if you often assemble furniture or do it for others, they are a helpful investment.
In summary: Not essential, but definitely a plus for precision and saving time.

ob die Montagehilfen, die man im Baumarkt separat kaufen kann, wirklich sinnvoll sind oder eher überflüssig

The usefulness of assembly aids for the BILLY shelf largely depends on the user’s level of experience and the desired outcome. From a technical standpoint, BILLY furniture is designed to be assembled using basic tools and without special aids.
This is accurate. Those who prioritize absolute precision and long-term stability, and who assemble furniture frequently, will find real value in such aids. However, the average DIY enthusiast is usually well served by the included instructions, which can save time and extra costs.
In practice, tests show that assembly aids for simple shelves like BILLY are more about convenience than necessity. Their value increases significantly with more complex constructions or when assembling multiple shelves simultaneously.

Hello Miranon, to add to your question, please also consider the type of shelving: the standard BILLY is relatively simple in design.
Many hardware stores offer so-called angle brackets or assembly clamps that make working without an extra helper easier. These tools are especially useful if you are working alone, as they can temporarily hold parts in place.
So it also depends on your personal situation: do you need such aids as a third hand? Or can someone assist you?
If you are on your own, a simple helper from the hardware store can make the assembly much less stressful. If you have two people, you hardly need something like that.
