Hello everyone,

I need some practical advice on how to safely transport a Billy bookshelf. I plan to take the shelf with me when moving into my new apartment, but I’m concerned about how to properly protect the individual boards and the frame to avoid scratches or cracks. Are there specific packing materials that work particularly well for this? And what is the best way to stack or secure the boards so they don’t shift during the move? Maybe there are general tips to keep in mind when transporting a Billy bookshelf to prevent damage.

Thanks in advance for your experience and recommendations!

For transporting Billy shelves, I strongly recommend using bubble wrap or blankets to wrap the boards. The edges are especially vulnerable – here, foam rubber or foam padding offers the best protection.

All boards should be stacked flat and side by side, ideally laid down to prevent bending. Securing them with straps is advisable if they are loose in the van. This prevents them from knocking against each other and getting damaged during transit.

I completely understand your concern about transporting the shelf safely. When I moved my Billy shelf once, it got scratched because I didn’t pad it properly.

My advice: Take your time with packing and make sure you have plenty of protective materials. For example, thick moving blankets and possibly some boxes to place the boards in.

Sometimes it also helps to take photos or mark where everything goes before assembling – this makes reassembling easier and gives you peace of mind.

Do you plan to fully disassemble the shelf or only transport certain parts?

I plan to fully disassemble the shelf, removing the sun panels and transporting the side walls separately. However, I have also considered whether some parts, such as the back panel, could possibly be rolled up or transported flat. If anyone has tips on this, that would be great.

Of course, I want to avoid losing any screws, so I will carefully label everything and pack the screws in small bags.

Regarding the back panel: The thin hardboard used for the Billy back panel is indeed very fragile and tends to break or warp if handled improperly.

I would only roll it if done extremely carefully – it must not be bent under any circumstances. Usually, it is better to transport the back panel flat.

The following procedure has proven effective:

1. Lay flat on a stable, smooth surface.
2. Place sufficient padding (bubble wrap, felt, or blankets) between the back panel and other parts.
3. Secure the back panel separately to prevent it from shifting.

The best method is to collect all screws and fittings in small, labeled zipper bags and secure them in the box with a photo or note. This way, everything is readily available during assembly.

Store boards flat with good padding, label and bundle screws. It is best to transport the back panel flat. Tie-down straps help secure everything in the vehicle. These are the basics.
