Hello everyone,

I am currently assembling a Billy bookshelf but have noticed that the official instructions are quite unclear and sometimes even confusing in several places. Some assembly steps don’t fully match the supplied materials, especially regarding the fastenings for the back panel and the shelves. Additionally, there are no instructions on how to improve stability when attaching the bookshelf to the wall.

Since I’m unsure whether to just proceed as is or to look for alternative sources or guides, my question to you is:

Are there any reliable, better-explained manuals or helpful video tutorials for the Billy bookshelf? Or do you have tips on how to best deal with the original uncertainties? I’m particularly interested in a clear step-by-step explanation that covers not only the assembly but also ways to enhance stability.

I would appreciate any advice that could make this easier. Thanks in advance!

Hey Lojule 🙂

I know the Billy shelf problem; the manual is often a bit of a puzzle. Some steps really require a lot of imagination to figure out. My tip: check out YouTube, where quite a few people show the assembly process in a relaxed way – sometimes even with creative hacks for extra stability.

Also, it helps to sort all the parts completely first and then take it step by step at your own pace. If you’re stuck anywhere, it might help to mention the exact part here.

That was also my trouble spot. When nailing the back panel, keep a steady hand; sometimes you need to slightly angle the nails.

Good luck and don’t give up!

PS: If you want, I can send you a few links 😉

It’s interesting that the instruction manual actually causes so much confusion. Cases like this highlight how important it is for major furniture manufacturers to provide clear, practical documentation. However, I wonder if this might be more of a generational issue: often it seems the instructions are designed with experts in mind and are not easy enough for laypeople to follow.

I agree. In your case, it might help to know whether you have the latest edition of the manual or an older version. Sometimes manufacturers fix these kinds of problems in updated releases.

Also: Are there alternative sources that IKEA itself recommends? If their official documents are insufficient, an official supplement would be helpful.

Finally, it would be interesting if someone could confirm whether the stability issues actually result from the assembly instructions—or whether they are due to design.

Who can share more on this?

If anyone is confused by the instructions: IKEA offers PDF versions of the manual on their website, often with better pictures.

The IKEA community forums also sometimes contain useful tips.

Stability is significantly improved by additional wall fasteners, which IKEA usually sells separately.

Now, a quick note on stability tips, as many tend to underestimate this:

For my two Billy bookshelves, I always screwed extra brackets to the back panel, which are not included in the standard instructions. This makes the shelf much more stable, especially when you load it with heavy books.

This is very important. And if you’re not sure how to insert the screws properly, there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube showing the right way to use wall plugs and screws for different wall types.

So, don’t worry, a Billy isn’t high-tech; a little care and patience are the key :-)
