Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to attach a Kallax shelf to a masonry wall and am looking for the best anchors for this purpose.

Since the shelf will be heavily loaded, the fastening needs to be absolutely secure. My wall consists of solid masonry (no drywall). I have heard about universal anchors, hammer-in anchors, toggle bolts, and heavy-duty anchors, but I am unsure which type offers the best combination of load capacity, safety, and ease of installation.

In your experience, which anchors are most suitable for securely fixing a Kallax shelf to masonry? Are there specific brands or types you would recommend, especially for bearing weight on the shelf board and preventing tipping?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Use metal heavy-duty anchors or high-quality plastic anchors with a large expansion range. Universal anchors generally work fine on solid walls, but if the shelf will bear a lot of weight, metal ones are preferable. Always choose anchors with the most suitable hole diameter for your screws and wall material.

I wonder: does a Kallax shelf really need such a high-end fixing? Many people overdo it with the anchors. Just use solid anchors once, put some weight on it, and that's it.

But if you want to be extra safe, why not go for chemical anchors? Sure, they are more complex, but then nothing will wobble. I find universal anchors a bit too conservative for these cases.

Hello Korhanru,

to answer your question in detail, I recommend the following approach:

1. Check the wall material: For solid masonry, heavy-duty metal expansion anchors or bolt anchors are the most suitable. Plastic anchors are acceptable if the wall is homogeneous and stable.

2. Calculate the load: A fully loaded Kallax shelf can exert 30-50 kg (66-110 lbs) per wall bracket depending on the contents. This means the anchor and screw must be able to support this load over time.

3. Anchor type:
- Metal expansion anchors (e.g., Fischer SX or Spax metal anchors) for high tensile loads.
- Chemical anchors (injection mortar with threaded rod) are the safest option, especially in porous masonry.

4. Drill hole and torque: Always use the appropriate drill bit and apply the manufacturer’s recommended torque to ensure the anchor fits correctly and the masonry is not damaged.

5. Installation tip: When inserting anchors, pay attention to the correct depth and cleanliness of the drill hole (dust can be removed with compressed air or a brush).

In summary: If you prioritize load capacity and safety, metal expansion anchors are the best choice. For very high loads or more fragile masonry, chemical anchors may be a better alternative.

Hope this helps! If you provide exact measurements or wall type, I can recommend specific products.

For solid masonry, standard plastic wall plugs are often sufficient, as long as the wall is not porous. For a Kallax shelf, I recommend either:

- Fischer UX plugs: versatile, with good holding power in solid masonry
- Spax metal expansion anchors: especially reliable for heavier loads (more than 20 kg (44 lbs) per anchor)

why not just use chemical anchors right away?

Chemical anchors are more complex to install and usually not necessary for normally load-bearing walls. For a Kallax on solid masonry, a mechanical anchor is generally enough.

In general, I recommend calculating the load per fixing point when choosing anchors and selecting those with a safety factor of at least 2. The type and length of the screw should also match the anchor. For Kallax, at least 6 mm (1/4 inch) plugs with 60 mm (2 3/8 inch) length are recommended, with corresponding screws.

Important: Drill cleanly, remove dust, and avoid using oversized drill holes. This helps prevent a loose fit.

Thanks for the tip. I also tend to prefer metal anchors, as I want to be sure about the load capacity and durability.

Fischer UX anchors: versatile application

For the Kallax shelf, would you recommend the classic Fischer UX anchors, or would metal expansion anchors like Spax be better?

The wall is concrete, a bit rough, so definitely not a hollow wall.

Is there a general rule of thumb for screw length when using these types of anchors?

Thanks again for the advice. I want to be on the safe side so the shelf won’t wobble, especially with children in the house 🙂
