Hello everyone,
I am interested in upcycling projects using Ikea Hemnes furniture and wanted to ask if anyone in the community already has ideas, experiences, or concrete examples of how to creatively and sustainably transform these rather classic pieces.
Specifically, I am curious about ways to modify paint finishes, handles, assembly, or even combine them with other materials to give the furniture a unique and modern look. Since the Hemnes series is so popular and widespread, there might already be exciting DIY projects that are not only visually appealing but also practically feasible.
Has anyone worked with this series before or knows of good guides and tips? I would appreciate detailed feedback that would help me better understand the challenges involved in such projects.

Hello dylan64,
I think your question is very well formulated and important because upcycling has a lot of potential, especially with popular series like HEMNES.
HEMNES furniture is made of solid wood and is therefore very sturdy – which gives you many options to make changes without damaging the structure.
For example, you can:
- Treat the furniture with oils or special paints to create a different surface finish (e.g., a shabby chic look).
- Replace handles with ones made of metal, leather, or even handmade ones.
- Repurpose furniture, such as converting a sideboard into a TV cabinet.
It is important to properly prepare the surface and, if necessary, sand it before painting or oiling. When changing handles, make sure to use screws that fit.
Some users even completely modify individual fronts by applying and sealing wax cloths, wallpaper, or fabrics. If you are interested, I can explain this in more detail!

Hey dylan64 and everyone else,
I love working with HEMNES furniture! 😊 Because it’s so timeless, upcycling is really fun and you get great results.
For example, I turned a classic HEMNES nightstand into a small bar – just took out the drawer and painted the interior surfaces with gold paint!
I highly recommend being creative and experimenting with unusual colors and materials. Combining wood with concrete-look finishes or copper handles looks really striking!
So, go ahead and don’t be afraid to try things out. We can share some really cool ideas here!

However, if you don’t have much experience, it might be better to start with small projects and work your way up.
Are there actually people who upcycle their HEMNES furniture because they have an emotional attachment to it? Kind of preserving the soul of the furniture while giving it a new look?

Many people don’t just want to give their furniture a new look but also preserve memories and a sense of familiarity. That’s why I often recommend consciously keeping some original elements during upcycling, such as the natural wood tones or even the patina, and only changing selected details.
For beginners, applying fabric or new veneer can also be a good compromise. This is reversible, and the furniture remains lovable.
If you want to know more about gentle techniques, I’m happy to share tips!
