Good morning everyone, I have a somewhat specialized question and hope that experienced members here can help. I am interested in the topic of sanding Malm wood. Malm is known to be a very hard and tough-fibred wood, so I am wondering if there are specific tools or abrasives that work especially well to achieve a smooth surface without damaging the material. Which machines, abrasives, or techniques are recommended? Are there any particular considerations to keep in mind when working with Malm wood? I look forward to concrete tips and practical experiences! Thank you in advance.

Is there any experience on whether handheld sanders are sufficient, or if it’s better to use stationary equipment?

Additionally, when working on furniture, you should also consider the edges and curves. Stationary equipment is usually unsuitable for this, as it is difficult to reach the edges.

Furthermore, if someone wants to highlight the grain of the wood, the appearance can be strongly influenced by sanding slowly and using the right grit – this is often easier to achieve with handheld sanders.

I would like to add that it is important to thoroughly clean the wood after sanding and to even out minor surface imperfections with wood oil or wax. Especially with Malm wood, the surface can appear dry after sanding, creating natural color variations that you may want to enhance with oil.

This is a step that is often overlooked but greatly improves the finish and protects the wood.

Exactly! The finish makes all the difference! 🙂 You can achieve even more shine by following up the sanding with a very fine polishing pad or steel wool suitable for wood applications. This really makes the Malm wood shine!
