Hello everyone, I have a question about the strength of screws specifically designed for wood in Billy shelves. Are there special screws for the Billy wooden shelves that are more durable than the standard fasteners? I’m particularly interested in whether there are screws that better resist pulling out or loosening under load, without having to use additional accessories like wall plugs. I want to make the shelf fairly sturdy and stabilize it in the simplest way possible. Does anyone know suitable screws from IKEA for Billy shelves, or do you recommend alternative types of screws that work well? Thanks for your advice!
Hey Sanna4, the topic of screws for BILLY shelves is really interesting! I always have a few tricks up my sleeve when it comes to improving stability. For example, I like to use screws with a Torx drive because they don’t slip as easily when tightening.
I’ve also had good experiences when not only paying attention to the screws themselves but also using the right screwing techniques—like pre-drilling holes to prevent the wood from splitting and to help the screws grip better.
I completely agree! Especially the small details like thread lockers or the right washers often make the difference between wobbly and rock solid 🙂

I would like to add that it is important not only that the screws are sturdy but also that they are suitable for the type of wood and furniture construction. BILLY shelves often use MDF or particleboard, which are more delicate than solid wood. Using screws that are too thick or too long can easily cause the material to split or tear out.
Therefore, it is worth using high-quality furniture screws with a specialized thread design that distributes the load better. Also, pre-drilling should not be overlooked to prevent splitting.
Additionally, combining screws with small dowels (if space and material allow) can provide even more stability, although the Ikea concept tends to rely mainly on screws alone.

Hello Sanna4, I also often work on reinforcing IKEA furniture, including BILLY.
Unfortunately, there are no official special screws from IKEA that are significantly stronger than the ones provided. Therefore, I recommend using high-quality chipboard screws from a specialized supplier, which have a stronger thread and a specially designed tip that makes insertion easier and improves grip.
My advice: the screws should be at least 4 mm in diameter and about 45 mm long (1.8 inches). With a Torx drive, they can be tightened well, reducing the risk of stripping the screw in the wood.
Regarding the question of whether screws without wall plugs can be stable enough: this is possible if you choose the right screw — however, it remains important to position the screw properly in the wood.
This can be especially useful for BILLY shelves.

Expanding screws or turbo screws that spread the connection area when driven in, thus improving grip
