Hello everyone, I have a specific question I would like to clarify in this forum: Are there any known or common issues with the IKEA Hemnes furniture range, especially under high humidity conditions?

I am referring to situations where solid wood furniture like Hemnes is placed in rooms that are frequently exposed to moisture – for example, kitchens, bathrooms without permanent ventilation, or certain basements.

I am particularly interested in whether there are reports of typical warping, wood swelling, cracks, or damage that can be attributed to these climate conditions.

Additionally, I would appreciate any advice on how others deal with this issue – for example, through maintenance, additional protective measures, or choosing a suitable location.

Thank you in advance for your insights and experiences!

Brief and to the point: High humidity above 60% causes swelling in Hemnes furniture.

Regular ventilation and keeping distance from water sources are essential.

With high humidity, it is better to choose furniture made of plastic or lacquered MDF.

Hemnes is solid wood and quite sturdy, but it does prefer dry air.

This statement is common, but often lacks more precise differentiation. Solid wood, including pine, is indeed sensitive to moisture, but its durability also depends on the quality of workmanship and surface treatment.

Furthermore:
- Does IKEA provide official guidelines on the maximum recommended indoor humidity?
- How do quality characteristics vary between individual production batches?

I believe this topic should not be viewed too generally, as practical experience shows that some furniture pieces are surprisingly resilient, even in humid environments.

Another point: What is the indoor temperature? The effect of moisture on wood depends on temperature and air circulation.

More measurement data and standardized testing results would be helpful.

Regarding the topic "IKEA Hemnes and high humidity," I would like to provide an objective summary:

- The Hemnes furniture range mainly uses solid pine wood, which is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture, potentially causing swelling and warping.
- The recommended environmental conditions for solid wood furniture in general are a relative humidity of about 40-60%.
- Permanently higher humidity levels (>60%) lead to measurable dimensional changes.
- IKEA notes in its care instructions to protect furniture from moisture and avoid direct exposure to water.
- Practical protective measures include using dehumidifiers, ensuring good ventilation, and surface treatment with appropriate wood oil or varnish.

Conclusion: Hemnes furniture is not inherently unsuitable for humid climates, but damage is possible with consistently high humidity levels. Preventive control of indoor climate is advisable.

Exactly right.

If that’s not possible, it’s better to place the Hemnes somewhere else, otherwise the wood will swell quickly.

There’s nothing more to add.
