Hello everyone,

I have an older Kallax shelving system from IKEA, which I mainly use for storing file folders and office supplies. Unfortunately, the original shelves in my model are relatively wide, which means less flexibility when dividing the compartments. So my question is: Are there narrow shelves available that can be used as an upgrade for older Kallax systems?

I mean shelves that are thinner than the standard ones and can be easily installed without having to rebuild the entire unit or modify it extensively. Ideally, they should fit into the existing elongated holes or support rails. I understand that IKEA has changed over the years, so I’m particularly interested in whether these types of narrow shelves can still be purchased somewhere or if there are alternative solutions or brands that are compatible.

I would appreciate any experience reports, tips on dimensions, sources, or DIY alternatives. Thanks in advance!

I think it’s important to clarify exactly what is meant by “thinner” or “narrower” here. The standard boards of the Kallax series are designed to be quite sturdy, not only in terms of depth but also thickness. Are you referring to reducing the depth (i.e. the length of the board between the side panels) or the thickness (the actual thickness of the wood)?

Because if it’s about thinner boards, there is a risk that the shelving unit will lose the stability that is crucial for a system like Kallax. I also doubt that IKEA offers official replacement parts with different dimensions. Most spare parts are the same thickness to ensure compatibility.

Have you checked if the manufacturer possibly offers accessories for older Kallax models? Otherwise, many people tend to have custom cuts made, but this can complicate the locking mechanisms or elongated holes.

I would recommend defining more precisely how much you want to change the dimensions. This sounds like a special case that might involve more effort than expected.

I understand that you’re looking for a more flexible configuration for your Kallax shelf; I’ve experienced the same myself.

Unfortunately, I’m quite sure that IKEA no longer sells narrower shelves than the standard version for Kallax—at least not as original accessories.

However, it might be possible to have narrow wooden boards cut to the correct depth (e.g., at hardware stores) and then install your own brackets. I know it’s not as convenient to work with as the original shelf supports, but it could be a viable option. I haven’t tried this myself yet, but many people report that a custom solution like this can work well if you use the right clips or brackets.

But importantly: you shouldn’t overload the shelf, as that will affect its stability.

Maybe someone else here in the community can offer tips on how to retrofit with original parts or build a clean, custom solution.

Hello,

I would like to add some basic information about the function of Kallax shelves, especially for those who have similar questions here.

The original shelves in Kallax units have special tabs or fixings that fit precisely into the pre-made elongated holes – this design provides the necessary stability and prevents the shelf from slipping out or wobbling.

This is definitely a solution that can easily be implemented, for example at hardware stores, if the cut boards are then secured with appropriate shelf brackets. However, it is important to ensure the load-bearing capacity of the brackets.

If you want to use the original fittings, replacing the shelves with narrower boards without adjusting the fittings is difficult or hardly possible. An alternative can be metal or plastic shelf inserts that slide into the compartment.

A tip: first measure the exact dimensions of the existing shelves and the elongated holes – often the depth and thickness of older models differ slightly from modern ones.

I’m happy to help with details if anyone can provide measurements or photos of the system (even though this is not a photo thread, measurements often help a lot).

I see that as the main challenge as well.

If Pifanau offers a retrofit with “different” narrower boards without the tabs and without the tensile strength of the originals, then the installation must be done completely differently. This actually requires more effort than it appears at first glance.

In such a case, I would also consider, instead of narrower wooden boards, whether a special insert or hanging system from third-party manufacturers might exist. Nowadays, there are many modular furniture components from the DIY or office furniture sector, some specifically designed to be compatible with Kallax. However, these are rarely cheaper than original IKEA accessories.

Sometimes IKEA also offers additional shelves for later system modifications, but these are usually not special sizes; rather, they are suitable universal standard sizes. Using standard boards combined with installing additional support fittings is often the more practical solution than attempting to use imported narrower boards.

Hey everyone!

It’s amazing how detailed you approach this topic! 🙂

I modified my old Kallax a bit and can say from experience: there’s no official IKEA solution for narrower shelves that fit the existing grooves, at least not for the older models. But!

It works great if you simply have wooden boards cut or laser-cut to the right dimensions! Then install the boards using flexible metal brackets like the ones commonly available at hardware stores. This way, you can create special compartments where originally there were only large spaces.

This greatly increases the shelf’s functionality, especially if you want to store small items that would otherwise shift around in the large compartments. Of course, the look won’t be 100% IKEA style, but it still looks harmonious if you match the color of the boards.

Give it a try – that way your Kallax becomes truly unique! 🙂
