Hello everyone,

I am currently considering whether there is any mold-resistant solution specifically for the KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA when used in a bathroom. Unfortunately, the bathroom tends to be quite humid, and especially with open furniture like the KALLAX, I am concerned that mold might develop on the wood edges or in the corners.

Are there any proven products or methods – such as a special paint, a sealant, or another treatment – that can effectively prevent mold from forming on the KALLAX under such high humidity?

It would also be helpful to know if these solutions affect the appearance or stability of the shelving unit.

Looking forward to your tips and experiences!

In general, I recommend a combination of preventive measures. For the KALLAX in the bathroom, a clear, mold-resistant wood preservative or an anti-mold paint specifically designed for damp environments is suitable. These create a protective layer that shields the wood from moisture and makes mold growth more difficult.

It is important that the product remains vapor-permeable (breathable) so that moisture can escape from the wood and no trapped dampness forms. Additionally, the bathroom should be well ventilated to keep humidity levels as low as possible.

Alternatively, special silicone-based impregnations or anti-mold coatings can be applied directly to the wood. In this case, it is advisable to use products tested according to DIN standards to ensure safety and effectiveness.

The appearance changes very little with clear preservatives, while paints will obviously color the shelf. The stability of the wood is not affected by these treatments.

In summary: yes, effective products are available, but proper application and environmental conditions are crucial.

I know that all too well! At first, the KALLAX in the bathroom sounds really practical, but the humidity is definitely an issue. What has worked well for me is letting it dry thoroughly before placing it in the bathroom, and then applying an anti-mold spray. There are also organic products that aren’t harsh but still keep mold away.

I once tried a mixture of vinegar and water, which is a natural mold inhibitor. It’s not perfect, but it helps to neutralize the worst spots. 🙂

Also, it’s always good to ventilate the room regularly, even if it’s cold—air exchange is invaluable. And hey, no need to worry, a KALLAX can handle some moisture as long as you take care of it. 🙂

Anti-mold paints are available at hardware stores, specifically designed for damp rooms. Simply apply and let dry. Important: always ensure good ventilation.

I completely agree. Additionally, I can suggest that you consider adding a vapor barrier or a special membrane to the back panel of the KALLAX shelf to keep moisture away from the boards.

It is also helpful to place small spacers under the shelf to prevent direct contact with any moisture from the floor.

If you plan to paint or stain the shelf, make sure the surface is clean, dust-free, and dry before starting the treatment. This will improve the protective effect.

If you like, I can recommend some products that work well in damp environments. Just let me know!
