Hello everyone,
I am currently considering buying a shelving system from IKEA and came across the Platsa range. My specific question is: Are there Platsa shelves with open compartments without doors or fronts? In other words, not closed cabinet units, but purely open shelves where you can display books or decorations visibly?
I have seen various options online, including combinations with doors and drawers, but not specifically completely open compartments. If anyone here has experience and knows whether IKEA Platsa offers open shelving, I would be very interested in a brief explanation or any tips. Also welcome are suggestions on whether the system can be modified to create open compartments, for example by removing doors or similar.
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Platsa is also available as open shelving without doors. However, the back panels are visible in open compartments and are usually made of backing panels.
Doors can be removed, but this does not always look good, as clamping or fixing points remain visible.
If you want open shelves, you should choose modules without doors or simply omit the respective fronts.

I understand that when shopping at IKEA, people often look for maximum flexibility and wonder how to modify systems that don’t come with matching fronts.
In my experience, the open compartments in PLATSA are usually the result of leaving out doors or combining the system with both doors and open units.
If fully open shelving is important, another IKEA system (such as BESTÅ or BILLY) might be more suitable, as open shelves and dedicated shelving units are more common there.
I can understand the frustration if PLATSA doesn’t meet your needs perfectly. However, there are always solutions if you’re willing to compromise on either the appearance or the stability.
