Hello everyone,

I’m planning to use an IKEA Platsa shelving unit as a storage solution for my living room. However, I noticed that many models do not have a fully closed back panel, which can be problematic, especially in open-plan spaces and freestanding shelves—mainly regarding stability and visible cables or wall marks.

So, my specific question is: Does IKEA offer the Platsa shelving unit with a fully closed back panel, or at least an option to purchase one as an accessory? So far, I have only seen open shelving sections with thin back panels, but no completely closed versions.

I would appreciate concrete information or experiences to help me finalize my planning. Thanks in advance!

Hi Bla_san!

The topic of back panels for IKEA Platsa is really interesting! 😊👍 As far as I know, there isn’t a closed back panel available as a standard part for Platsa. The components are more designed for modular flexibility, and many back panels are just thin boards that create a lighter, airier look – which supports the open style.

Here’s a tip: Some people have reinforced or completely rebuilt the back panels themselves using wood or MDF boards, then screwed them on. This works really well, is quite affordable, and adds a lot of stability! Maybe that’s an option that suits you?

I think you should definitely try a DIY project like this—there are plenty of guides out there, and it’s a lot of fun! If you want, I can share some tips with you 😄💪

For clarification: The IKEA Platsa series is not designed with a fully enclosed back panel in its standard configuration. The back panels usually consist of thin hardboard or particleboard material that serves as a back panel but does not provide full cladding.

For freestanding applications, IKEA itself recommends using additional stabilization methods, such as anchoring to the wall, which also enhances safety.

If a fully enclosed back panel is desired, a custom retrofit is advisable, as described by vinpau. One option is to attach cut-to-size MDF panels, which can be painted or laminated. This creates a sturdy, closed back panel and can be visually matched to the Platsa units.

There is no direct IKEA accessory that provides a fully enclosed back panel for Platsa.

In short: No, IKEA does not sell Platsa units with fully closed back panels.

Alternative: Buy back panels separately, cut them to size yourself, or combine with wall fasteners. There are no other options.

That basically sounds reasonable, thank you! How stable are such DIY back panels compared to the original thin boards? Is there no risk of warping or curling due to moisture?

Could you please explain in more detail how to best attach the MDF panel without limiting the modularity of the Platsa system? Are there standard screws or fastening methods that have proven effective?

After all, I don’t want the back panel to cause problems during transport or when reassembling. Thanks to everyone!

It is recommended to fix the MDF back panel using small screws or brackets attached to the inside edges of the shelving frames. When doing this, consider the following points:

- Choose MDF panels of suitable size and thickness (5-8 mm (0.2-0.3 inch)) to avoid unnecessarily increasing the weight.
- Pre-drill screw holes to protect the material.
- Use a fastening method that allows the panel to be removable if needed (i.e., avoid full-surface gluing).
- The panels can be painted or laminated to reduce sensitivity to moisture.

This way, the modularity is largely preserved, and the back panel can contribute to both stability and appearance.

If you plan to reconfigure the system frequently, use removable fasteners to keep modifications simple. Small angle brackets or quick-release fasteners are suitable options.
