ᐅ Are there IKEA PLATSA modules available with an open back panel?

FuarisHello everyone,
I am currently planning a living room cabinet using the Ikea PLATSA series. I have a rather specific question that I have not been able to find a clear answer to in any catalog or online store so far: Are there any Ikea PLATSA modules that are intentionally designed with an open back?
Specifically, I am interested in whether Ikea offers any PLATSA module frames or cabinets where the back is deliberately left open, meaning no fixed back panel is installed. This would be important, for example, when mounting against a wall with fixed connections or to facilitate cable routing.
Or are all PLATSA modules normally equipped with back panels? Is it possible to simply omit the back panel during assembly, or is the construction designed so that a closed back panel is mandatory and load-bearing?
I look forward to your experiences and as detailed answers as possible, since I plan to actually use the module without a back panel and want to know what options Ikea allows in this regard. Thanks in advance!

Are there Ikea PLATSA modules that are intentionally designed with an open back?As far as I know, Ikea always supplies the PLATSA modules with back panels because they are very important for the cabinet’s stability. The back panel is not just a design feature; it significantly contributes to the strength and shape of the unit.

If you need cable cutouts, there are sometimes options to create openings behind the back panel without removing it entirely.
My advice: If you prefer not to use the back panel, you should at least plan for an alternative form of wall support, such as additional wall anchors or stabilizers.
An open back panel with PLATSA? Essentially, this goes against the system’s design philosophy. Ikea PLATSA is modular, but the back panel is not an optional feature; it is an integral part of the construction.
Why would Ikea offer an open back panel when even retrofitting back panels is essential for stability? It seems more like an attempt to create an unintended gap, which unnecessarily weakens the entire cabinet structure.
That’s a clever workaround. The back panel can be inconvenient, but it also provides protection and stability. Simply omitting it altogether is quite risky. Skilled professionals with good craftsmanship might manage, but Ikea modules without a back panel are not part of Ikea’s official plan.

In short: No, Ikea does not offer PLATSA modules with an open back panel.
Back panels are always included and important for stability. You can remove them, but the cabinet will become unstable.
If cable pass-throughs are needed, holes are made in the back panel or cable conduits are used.

A few months ago, I assembled a PLATSA wardrobe myself and initially wanted to leave out the back panels—but that idea was quickly dismissed during assembly! Without the back panel, the whole unit is simply too unstable, and it wouldn’t have added much visually either.

This way, you get freedom for cables and still have a stable cabinet.
Sometimes it’s better to slightly modify the standard solution rather than doing something completely different 😉.
