Hello everyone,

I have a question that has been on my mind lately: Are there any furniture waxes specifically suitable for treating IKEA Kallax shelves without leaving streaks or uneven spots on the surface?

I have already tried several waxes, but with both unfinished and lacquered Kallax units, I keep encountering the problem that the wax either dries with streaks or appears too glossy in some areas while remaining rather matte in others. My goal is to protect and enhance the wood look without making the surface appear uneven or blotchy.

Does anyone have experience with particular brands or products that work well on Kallax? Are there any special application techniques that help prevent streaking?

Thanks in advance for your expert advice!

Streaking with furniture wax on Kallax is usually caused by a combination of applying too much wax, unsuitable wax composition, and less than ideal application technique.

Thank you for the precise summary! I’m particularly interested in the tip about sanding before applying. The surface of Kallax is often smooth and sometimes already coated with melamine. Could sanding damage the finish or generally be too harsh on the surface?

Or is this recommendation more suitable for untreated wood versions?

Also, I’m wondering if the treated Kallax becomes more durable in everyday use after waxing. Does anyone have experience regarding maintenance and longevity?

Very good question!

If the surface is melamine-coated, you should avoid sanding, as this layer is very thin and delicate. Sanding will damage the sealant and is more likely to cause problems.

For untreated wood, light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (P220 or finer) makes sense. This helps wax or oil adhere better.

Regarding durability: furniture wax on open-pored wood offers some protection against moisture and wear, but it is not a substitute for a paint or varnish layer. It should be refreshed regularly, approximately every 6 to 12 months. For a more durable surface, it is better to use paint or hard wax oils.

A brief experience report from me: For my Kallax, I used a natural wax from Clou that was wonderfully easy to apply and did not leave streaks.

My tip: Work with a clean, soft cloth in circular motions and take a break before buffing off the excess wax. This creates a beautiful, velvety shine and preserves the natural wood appearance.

Enjoy trying it out! 😊
