ᐅ Kallax damaged by cleaning products – how to restore?

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Kallax shelving unit from Ikea. Unfortunately, I made a mistake while cleaning: I probably used an unsuitable cleaning agent, most likely one that was too harsh and/or not suitable for wood veneers. Now there are several dull discolorations and some areas where the surface feels slightly roughened. I’m not sure if it’s just surface damage or if the material has been penetrated. My question is: How can I best restore a Kallax shelving unit that has been damaged this way by using the wrong cleaning products? Are there any recommended repair or restoration methods to visually improve or completely fix the surface? What approach has worked well for you when laminate or coated surfaces have been dulled or affected? I’m hoping for detailed tips—thanks in advance!

Wood oil is less suitable for melamine-coated surfaces; it is better to use a furniture polish based on synthetic materials. Oil does not absorb well and can leave stains.

It is important to know the exact coating, as melamine is not wood. The surface is scratch-resistant, but if damaged by solvents, the damage is usually irreparable, unlike with real wood.

My advice: Use a special laminate repair pen with matching color. Alternatively, there are repair kits with wax that can mask small surface defects. Complete refinishing is hardly possible and rarely cost-effective.

For future cleaning, use only pH-neutral cleaners and preferably damp cloths without chemical additives!

Oh, that’s frustrating! But don’t worry, you’ll probably be able to restore your Kallax shelf nicely! 🙂

I once had great results with a laminate repair kit – it helped me refresh spots that had become dull. Feel free to give it a try! For the future: it’s best to always use a mild cleaner (a little dish soap) and soft cloths, that’s safer! Good luck!

When the surface has become roughened and matte, all tips involving sanding and varnishing are only methods to improve the appearance, but not a true repair.

The problem is that melamine resin coatings do not have a real surface with layers that can be sanded down again. You can only mask the damage. For a permanent repair, the affected panel would need to be replaced.

If that is not financially feasible, the procedure described by nikian is clean and the best that can be done.

Just as an addition: Avoid aggressive cleaners in the future at all costs. For cleaning Kallax, lukewarm water with a little dish soap is ideal. Do not use scouring agents or solvents, as they are harmful to the surface.

Thank you very much for the numerous helpful comments and tips!

Last night, I lightly treated the surface with 600-grit sandpaper and worked very carefully. The matte, rough areas have become somewhat more uniform, but unfortunately, they are still visible. Today, I will get a laminate repair kit and report on how well it works.

Interestingly, I couldn’t find any specific cleaning instructions for the Kallax on Ikea’s website, only general recommendations. Does anyone have experience with whether Ikea offers cleaners or maintenance products that are suitable for Kallax?

One last question: Should I seal the repaired area afterward, or is the impregnation from the repair kit sufficient? I want to avoid the spot wearing out again so quickly.
