ᐅ Are there better hinges from third-party suppliers for Ikea PAX doors?

LaluroHello everyone,
I have a question that might have come up for some of you with Ikea PAX wardrobes: Are there better third-party hinges for PAX doors that are superior in quality to the original Ikea hinges or offer specific advantages?
I ask because I recently assembled a wardrobe and noticed that the simple hinges can sometimes seem a bit unstable. I’m especially interested in whether there are alternative hinges that provide longer durability, smoother opening, or even better adjustability, without losing the original design and ease of installation.
Does anyone know of hinges that are specifically recommended by manufacturers for PAX doors or that are considered reliable by the community? Any tips on aftermarket modifications or adjustments to the originals would also be welcome.
Thanks in advance!

KarTristan1 Apr 2018 08:16I would like to briefly address this: Basically, the Ikea PAX hinges are designed to ensure easy installation, which is not always the case with third-party hinges. The main factor here is the mounting system into which the hinges click.
From my own experience, I can say that there are indeed high-quality alternatives from brands like Blum or Hettich that are significantly more robust and durable. These hinges sometimes offer better soft-closing features and finer adjustment options.
However, it should be noted that you often have to modify or re-drill the mounting holes, as these hinges are not 1:1 compatible with the original PAX hinges.
In summary: Yes, there are better hinges, but installation is not plug & play and requires some craftsmanship.

Of course, Blum and Hettich are generally highly regarded in the hinge market, but whether they are always the best choice for an Ikea PAX system is something I would question.
Because it also comes down to the overall construction: how well the hinges are compatible with the PAX door, how precisely the drill holes align, and whether the opening mechanism works smoothly with the original fittings. It doesn’t help much to have better hardware if the door doesn’t fit properly or if countless adjustments are needed during installation.
Are there reliable data or practical experience regarding wear, functionality, and especially user-friendliness of alternative hinges on Ikea PAX doors? I have found only a few really reliable statements in various forums, and many seem to be based on hearsay.

Johnathon2 Apr 2018 20:43Interesting topic with several complexities. Over the past few months, I have thoroughly researched the PAX system, including the hinges, as I was looking for options to use them operationally.
First of all: The Ikea PAX hinges are basically a standard cup hinge system, mostly with integrated soft-close damping. This roughly corresponds to entry-level hardware. The challenge is that so-called "universal" or third-party hinges may technically be better, but almost always require modifications.
Important points when replacing the hinges are:
- Drill hole diameter and spacing must fit or be modified
- The hinge cup must fit properly into the recess, which can be tricky with PAX
- The damping mechanism often differs, which can lead to unusual opening or closing behavior
- The mounting plate – Ikea uses a special quick-mount plate that is often not available from third-party manufacturers
For example, I tested the BLUMOTION hinge (Blum) and found the quality and durability to be very good. However, I had to drill new holes and slightly adjust the doors.
In conclusion: If you have the time and craftsmanship skills, better hinges are possible. For the average homeowner, I would not recommend it.
How exactly did you install the hinges? Are you using the full glass doors or the classic wooden doors? That makes a difference when choosing the hinges.

I am using the classic wooden doors, the ones with the usual wood reinforcement and not the full glass doors. The hinges were completely original, although I find the damping somewhat weak, and after more than a year of use, some of the doors on certain cabinets have warped slightly and the hinges have become a bit loose.
I am interested in switching to a higher-quality hinge that offers a significantly longer lifespan or better adjustability.
Features like soft-closing, precise adjustment (hinge depth, height, angle), and long-term stability are important to me. However, I do not want to completely redrill or extensively modify the entire cabinet. I am thinking of a hinge that is as compatible as possible with the PAX mounting system to keep installation simple.
Does anyone know specific product names or manufacturers that offer something like this? Or are there any positive experiences shared within the forum?
