Hello everyone, I am currently in the process of dismantling several IKEA Malm dressers and wonder if there are any tips or tricks that could make the furniture disassembly significantly faster and more efficient. The reason is that the individual pieces are quite sturdily built, and although the instructions are helpful, by the third time they do feel somewhat time-consuming. I am especially interested in proven methods that make sorting the screws easier, taking the units apart without damage, or any tools that have proven to be particularly useful. Are there any experiences with how to avoid common pitfalls or practical tips for a clean and speedy dismantling? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Label all screws and parts with small stickers to keep track of them.
A cordless screwdriver with torque control is very helpful.
Remove the back panel last.
That's basically all you need to do.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful tips so far! I find the suggestion about the rounded-head hex bit particularly interesting; I will definitely try that next week.

One more question: How do you best organize small parts during disassembly when you’re taking apart several Malm dressers at once? Do you use separate containers for each piece of furniture to avoid mixing things up?

I sometimes even use colored tape or Post-its so I don’t have to search around when rebuilding
That sounds really practical. I can imagine colored markings are especially helpful when dealing with multiple pieces of furniture. Are there any other organizational tips you swear by?

For organization, I recommend using small, stackable containers in different colors for each piece of furniture. Preferably ones with lids to prevent small parts from getting lost. Labeling them with furniture numbers or room names also helps.

Additionally, I would attach a small note to all screws indicating their exact position on the furniture, especially if the dressers have slight variations.

Although this increases the effort during disassembly, it saves a lot of time and frustration during reassembly.

For quick disassembly: First, remove all drawers. Sort screws into bags, preferably with labels. Use a cordless drill with the appropriate bit, and only remove the back panel at the very end. Done.
