Hello everyone,
I would like to start a discussion on the topic: Are there any good tips for effective yet gentle cleaning of IKEA Hemnes furniture, especially when children live in the household?
I have noticed that with children’s rooms in particular, the Hemnes series appears noticeably more worn due to frequent use and typical marks from children (stains, fingerprints, scratches).
I am looking for practical and as safe as possible cleaning methods for this furniture series because I want to avoid damaging the surface with harsh cleaners. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on how to keep wooden furniture clean and well-maintained in everyday life with children?
Thanks in advance for your informed answers!

When children are involved, I strongly recommend avoiding sharp or ammonia-based cleaners. These can severely damage the wood finish.

Better: dish soap in water, gently wipe and dry afterwards.

Before I work with cleaning agents, I like to open windows to improve air circulation. This is especially important when children are present.
I also use cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils or dirt residues onto the wood.

As additional information: Hemnes furniture has a treated surface, usually with lacquer or lacquered wood. The sensitivity to liquids and cleaning agents depends on this treatment.

For children's rooms, I recommend a combination of regular dusting with a dry cloth, immediate removal of stains with a slightly damp cloth, and occasional care using a mild furniture oil or wax specifically designed for lacquered wood.

However, avoid silicone- or alcohol-based products, as these can damage the lacquer.

Another tip: Test the cleaning agent on an inconspicuous spot to prevent surface damage.

Daily use with children will inevitably leave some marks, but with these measures, Hemnes furniture remains well-maintained and retains its style for a long time.
