Hello everyone,
I recently noticed some stains on my Ikea Hemnes furniture and am wondering if there are any special cleaning tips that are particularly effective without damaging the surface. The Hemnes series mainly consists of lacquered solid pine wood.
I am especially interested in how to remove stubborn stains like red wine, grease, or ink without harming the surface or causing unwanted fading. It would also be helpful to know if there are common household remedies that can be safely used, or if it is better to use specific products designed for lacquered wood.
Perhaps someone has experience with cleaning Hemnes furniture and can share advice on care and stain removal that goes beyond regular dusting and damp wiping. I look forward to your answers!

For the targeted removal of stains on Hemnes furniture, I recommend a multi-step cleaning process:
- Phase 1: Mechanically remove surface dirt with a soft, damp microfiber cloth; avoid abrasive materials.
- Phase 2: Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent, such as diluted dish soap, to dissolve greasy residues.
- Phase 3: For pigment-based stains (red wine, ink), a diluted vinegar solution (1:3) or a wood-friendly stain remover is suitable. Test compatibility on an inconspicuous area first.
- Phase 4: After each treatment, be sure to clean with clear water and allow to dry to prevent residues that could damage the finish.
Additionally, many manufacturers recommend regular maintenance with appropriate wood care products to protect the finish and prevent stain formation.

Thank you for the tips so far, most of them have been really helpful! I also have Hemnes furniture and once had to deal with light ink stains.
What helped me was patience and gentle cleaning attempts using isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Be very careful to dab only, not rub.
I understand that the surface is sensitive – however, I wanted to ask if you have any recommendations on products to definitely avoid, since I don’t always understand all the ingredient lists myself.
Looking forward to hearing your experiences!

I am also approaching this topic very thoroughly, as Hemnes furniture should be maintained to stay attractive for as long as possible. Fundamentally, it is important to differentiate between types of stains, since different chemical properties and reaction mechanisms apply to stains on lacquered pine wood.
For stains such as red wine or ink: immediate blotting reduces absorption. For dried stains, a mixture of 70% isopropyl alcohol and water in a 1:1 ratio rubbed gently with a cotton cloth is effective. Be careful to distribute the moisture evenly to avoid fading and discoloration.
For grease stains: use warm water with a few drops of dish soap, then wipe with distilled water.
Keep in mind the dynamics of the lacquer film; avoid abrasive sponges or aggressive agents like ammonia or scouring powders, as they roughen and damage the protective layer.
Question for the thread starter and others: Which cleaning agents have you used so far, and with what success? This information can help provide more precise recommendations.

Question: What kind of stains are you dealing with exactly? Red wine, grease, ink, or something else? That could help clarify the recommendation.
Thanks for the hint! Mainly, these are red wine stains and some smaller coffee splashes. I’ve also noticed that certain areas have become slightly dull, probably due to using traditional wood care products that aren’t suitable for lacquered wood.

I’m also interested in knowing which specific care products you would recommend for lacquered pine wood furniture to preserve and maintain this type of finish.
Thanks again to everyone for the tips and shared experiences so far!
