Yannis64A few months ago, I bought a bed and dressers from the IKEA Hemnes series, which are all made of solid pine wood. Now I’m wondering if anyone has recommendations for the proper care of Hemnes wood, especially regarding surface treatment.
What products are suitable to preserve the natural wood grain while also creating a protective layer against scratches, moisture, or discoloration? Should special oils, waxes, or varnishes be used, and how often does this furniture require treatment?
I’m also interested in whether cleaning with traditional household remedies like vinegar or water mixed with soap is advisable or should rather be avoided.
I would greatly appreciate helpful, detailed tips or personal experiences, as I want to keep the wood looking nice and durable for as long as possible.

Hemnes is made of pine, but if you apply too many protective layers, you completely lose the authentic feel of solid wood.
I think many people overestimate the need for oils and polishes. Wood is a living material and should be allowed to breathe. A light wipe with a damp cloth and occasional treatment with a plant-based oil (e.g., linseed oil) are sufficient.
Of course, you should avoid water, but I’d set aside the panic mode with special waxes and varnishes. Ants during renovation might actually damage the wood more than normal use.
Proper care of IKEA Hemnes furniture, made from solid pine wood, requires gentle and targeted treatment.
- Cleaning: Use a soft, slightly damp cloth; avoid harsh cleaners or vinegar, as they can damage the wood finish.
- Protection: The surface is usually sealed with clear lacquer. To extend its lifespan, you can occasionally apply a care oil specifically designed for lacquered solid wood.
- Oils: Pure linseed oil or tung oil-based products are recommended if you want to renew the surface or refresh worn areas.
- Frequency: Applying oil or wax every 6–12 months (6–12 months) is sufficient, depending on use and wear.
- Avoid direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent cracks and discoloration.
In summary: Using mild cleaning methods and regular but not excessive care will help maintain the wood and its appearance optimally.

I would like to add that IKEA Hemnes furniture usually comes with a protective finish already applied.
If you want to oil or treat the furniture later, it is recommended to lightly sand the surface with very fine sandpaper (grit 240 or higher) to roughen it slightly, allowing the oil to absorb better.
Oiling should not be done too frequently to avoid attracting dust.
Vinegar or harsh cleaners can damage the protective finish and are therefore not suitable. Mild soap or pH-neutral cleaners are acceptable but should be used sparingly.
