ᐅ Are replacement parts for KALLAX cheaper when purchased directly in the store?

ferenc5Hello everyone,
I’m currently considering whether it is actually more cost-effective to buy spare parts for the KALLAX shelving system directly at an IKEA store rather than ordering them online or through third-party sellers. Specifically, I’m interested in how the pricing compares when you need individual shelves, back panels, or doors without having to purchase an entire new unit.
Does anyone have firsthand experience with the differences? Is shopping in-store financially better because you might be able to buy parts individually or avoid shipping costs? Or do online shops or specialized suppliers offer better prices, especially if you only need a few spare parts?
I’m also interested in availability differences—has anyone noticed cases where parts were more readily available in the store than online? I’d appreciate it if users could share their experiences here, especially focusing on KALLAX spare parts. Thanks!

Hey ferenc5,
interesting question! A few months ago, I also bought individual shelves for my KALLAX because I wanted to customize some compartments. The prices in the store actually seemed a bit cheaper to me, especially if you buy several parts at once.
You shouldn’t underestimate the shipping factor – with online orders, you often have to pay shipping fees that can quickly raise the total cost. In the store, you can usually inspect the part and take it home immediately – no waiting time and no shipping costs. However, I would always recommend calling the store first to check if the desired replacement part is in stock. Not all parts are available everywhere.
In my case, it was the other way around. The online assortment seemed more extensive to me, but with some uncertainty about whether shipping is possible and affordable.
So: Cheaper in the store due to saved shipping costs, online possibly a larger selection. Hope this helps :-)

Spare parts are almost always cheaper when purchased directly at the IKEA store, as there are no shipping costs. You can often find individual shelves or doors sold separately there, whereas online they are usually offered in sets. However, the most reliable method is to inquire in person or by phone.
I would like to add a brief overview of how to proceed with KALLAX replacement parts:
1. Check exactly what is needed (shelf, back panel, door, etc.) and whether it is the current model.
2. Search for replacement parts online at IKEA – sometimes only complete units or sets are available, which can increase the price.
3. Call the IKEA store directly to inquire about the availability of individual parts. Often, these are stored in the warehouse, and an employee can provide the part at a lower cost.
4. Be sure to consider shipping costs when ordering online. For small parts and a few individual pieces, shipping can be more expensive than the part itself.
5. Alternative: Third-party sellers might be cheaper but do not guarantee perfect fit or original quality.
That’s a good point. I would always recommend calling the store first and, if the part is available, picking it up in person. This way, you can also immediately find out if you need anything else or if there are compatible replacement parts to consider.
This helps avoid unpleasant surprises regarding price and availability. Hope this is helpful!
