Hello everyone,

I recently completed a DIY modification on my IKEA Kallax units. I connected two units together, reattached the legs, and adjusted the back panels. However, after the modification, one unit stands slightly higher than the other, so the surfaces do not align flush.

My question is: What can I do to make the Kallax units all sit at the same height again after such a modification? I have considered uneven floors or different legs but am unsure how best to compensate for or correct this. Are there any proven tips or specific accessories that can help level out inconsistencies?

I look forward to your advice and experiences, thank you in advance!

Hello pabatau,

It’s good that you explained your issue so clearly. Often, the problem is caused by uneven feet or an uneven floor, but with a DIY renovation, small differences in assembly or gluing of the modules can also be the cause.

My advice: First, check with a spirit level whether the floor is really flat. If not, the base needs to be leveled accordingly. If your modules have different feet, try to replace them with identical, height-adjustable furniture glides. These are affordable, easy to install, and allow precise height adjustment.

In addition, it can help to secure the connection of the modules at the base with clamps and, if necessary, to place thin wooden shims (spacers) between the module and the foot to make the final adjustment.

It is also important that the back panel and the bottom have a clean fit — sometimes the thickness of the panels differs slightly here, which can cause the height difference.

Summary:
1. Check the floor with a spirit level
2. Use identical, height-adjustable furniture glides
3. Secure the modules and, if needed, adjust with shims
4. Check back panels and bottom for consistent thickness

I hope this helps!

Furniture glides are inexpensive and help with precise height adjustment.

That’s brilliant! 🙂 Especially with DIY projects, it’s often only after assembly that you realize how small things like uneven legs can ruin the whole look.

I’d also recommend setting aside some extra time during your renovation to adjust the feet properly. If you plan to permanently connect the modules, it’s really important that they are perfectly aligned! Maybe you can test the modules with some spacers in their final position before you nail or glue everything together.

You’ve got this, keep at it! It’s going to look great in your home. 😉

Hello pabatau,

I understand your problem well; such height differences are unfortunately quite common with DIY modifications on Kallax units. An important point to consider is whether your units rest fully on the floor or if one side might be "floating" due to unevenness.

If your floor is uneven, you can try a simple trick: use self-adhesive, non-slip felt pads of varying thicknesses or combined underlays under the feet to level them. These are easy to adjust and essentially serve the same purpose as adjustable furniture glides but often cost less.

You also mentioned that the back panels were modified. Make sure they are not twisted or warped. I would recommend taking the units apart again, carefully screwing together all connection points, and then checking the alignment with a spirit level.

If you used wood glue, the material may have warped slightly as it dried. Sometimes, readjusting with clamps or adding extra screws in critical spots can help.

A question for you: How exactly did you connect the units? With new connectors, screws, or glue? That might already be a useful clue.

Thanks for the detailed response! I connected the modules using brackets that I screwed in from the inside, and I used glue for the back panels. The floor is slightly uneven, which I am noticing now.

The idea of using furniture glides sounds good, I will give that a try.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I believe I shouldn’t fix the modules too rigidly yet, so I can align them optimally.

I will try out these tips and report back with any updates. Many thanks to everyone so far!
