Hello everyone, I am looking for effective ways to make Ikea Brimnes furniture childproof. Specifically, I am concerned about the wardrobes and dressers from this series, as I have a young daughter and want to prevent her from opening drawers or doors, which could cause injury or allow her to access items that are not meant for her.
I have already read about child safety solutions like Montessori locks or clamp devices but am unsure which ones really fit well or if there are any special recommendations for the Brimnes series. It would be great if you could share your experiences or tips, especially practical options that are easy to install without significantly changing the appearance or functionality of the furniture.

Hello uriel63, great topic! 🎉 Childproofing is so important, especially with furniture that has drawers like Brimnes.
I used plastic clip locks on our furniture that simply clamp onto the cabinet doors. They work great without drilling, and the little one can’t get in anymore.
I also recommend anchoring the furniture to the wall—better to be safe! 😊

edisondan23 Jan 2017 10:43Regarding child safety for Ikea Brimnes furniture: The series is often made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF), sometimes with glass fronts on certain cabinets.
To install child safety devices, I recommend the following options:
- Magnetic cabinet locks mounted on the inside, which remain visually discreet.
- Plastic clamp locks as a cost-effective alternative, but these should be checked regularly.
- Wall anchoring of the furniture to prevent tipping hazards.
It is essential to ensure that the furniture is secured following Ikea’s instructions to guarantee maximum safety.

Mathiasche23 Jan 2017 12:08Hello uriel63, I completely understand your concern. There are a few important points to consider regarding childproofing Brimnes furniture.
Drawers and doors can usually be fitted with clamp- or hinge-style locks. It is important that these are not too easy for children to open, but at the same time remain convenient for you to use daily.
Additionally, I recommend making sure that dressers or cabinets are secured to the wall to prevent them from tipping over. This is especially important for small children who like to pull on furniture.
If you specifically want to use clamp locks, ensure they are made from non-toxic materials and do not have small parts that your child could swallow.
Do you already have specific locks in mind that you plan to install?

Magnetic cabinet locks that are mounted inside and therefore visually discreet. This recommendation is common, but it would be wise to check whether these magnetic locks actually block the opening mechanism of the Brimnes cabinets reliably. The hinges on Brimnes cabinets are different from those on other models, which could affect their effectiveness.
Additionally, the locks used should be childproof, meaning the child should not be able to open them independently. Do you have experience with whether magnetic locks are reliable in this case, or if clamp-style locks are more suitable?
