Hello everyone,

I’m currently considering how to upgrade IKEA Malm furniture with minimal effort and resources. My goal is to break away from the typical standard look and make the pieces visually more interesting without significant investment or professional craftsmanship skills. Are there simple but effective methods or tricks to personalize the Malm series? Perhaps you have ideas regarding colors, materials, or small modifications that can make a big impact?

Looking forward to your suggestions!

Basically, I recommend starting to upgrade Malm furniture with simple methods that require little effort and are reversible. For example:

- Replacing the handles with screw-on handles made of metal or wood, which instantly gives a more premium look.
- Using contact film or self-adhesive foil to change the surface color or create wood grain effects.
- Using porcelain or glass knobs instead of standard handles.

These approaches are cost-effective, manageable in terms of time, and can be done quite well by beginners with some care.

Here, I would question the effectiveness of just changing the handles. While the look changes, if the piece of furniture itself appears cheap, the overall impression remains weak.

Use of contact film
This is certainly an affordable approach, but I recommend using high-quality film, as cheap films become unattractive quickly. Additionally, the film often changes the surface texture, which doesn’t always fully eliminate the typical flat-pack furniture look.

Therefore, my question to everyone: What are your experiences with painting or staining Malm furniture? Is it worth it for the particleboard, or is it more likely a wasted investment?

Good point, Josefane. Painting or staining is definitely an interesting option for me. Since Malm furniture is usually made of particleboard with a foil coating, I’m concerned about whether the surface preparation would be extensive or if it’s possible to paint directly without the paint peeling off.

Does anyone have experience to share regarding durability and the visual result? I’m also uncertain about the compatibility of different paints with the foil. The goal is a lasting change that can be achieved with simple methods.

With Malm furniture, there is always the challenge that the surface is very smooth and not very receptive to paint or stain. For painting, it is recommended to lightly sand the surface with fine sandpaper (grit 220 to 320). This creates a good base for water-based paints or spray paints.

Alternatively, special primers designed for plastic surfaces, particularly suitable for laminate coatings, can be used. This achieves a more durable result without the need to completely sand down the surface or remove the laminate.

Although this may seem time-consuming, it is quite manageable with some patience. Additionally, small parts such as cabinet fronts or tabletops are ideal for experimenting with these methods.

A primer is often the key when refreshing the paint on IKEA furniture with particleboard surfaces, especially on Malm. I recommend using an acrylic-based primer before painting with acrylic or polyurethane paint.

Regarding upgrades through materials: replacing the handles, as mentioned above, or adding self-adhesive decorative metal elements (e.g., trim on drawer edges) can be very effective.

For small additions, vinyl stickers also work well and can be easily removed.
