Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and now I would like to add some shelves. Unfortunately, my model is missing a few boards that I didn’t order initially. My question is: Where can I buy KALLAX shelves separately?

I have already contacted IKEA directly, but it is often difficult to get individual parts without ordering complete sets. I have also looked at other online sellers, but either I can’t find suitable shelves or it’s unclear whether they are truly compatible.

Has anyone had experience with where to find original or at least very closely matching replacement shelves? Ones that not only fit the dimensions but also match in appearance and stability.

I would really appreciate any tips on this topic, especially recommendations for reliable sources or shops. Thanks in advance!

That’s a classic question – IKEA doesn’t make it easy when you only need individual shelves. I had the same issue and ended up finding some through classifieds or second-hand platforms. People often sell parts they no longer need there.

If it doesn’t have to be original, you can also have plywood cut to size at a hardware store. The dimensions fit pretty closely, and with a bit of paint you can get a similar look. It’s definitely sturdy and usually cheaper.

But honestly: original parts are often better in terms of material thickness and surface finish. ;-) So it’s worth visiting IKEA, maybe even asking directly in the store – sometimes they still have leftover stock or can order parts.

Good luck and let us know what you find!

That’s true, especially with KALLAX where the melamine coating on the shelves is important for durability and appearance.

A tip: IKEA sometimes offers replacement parts through customer service, usually available by phone order. I personally ordered extra shelves this way, but it took a few weeks.

Alternatively, some specialized furniture accessory retailers produce shelves made of MDF or particleboard in IKEA dimensions. Here, you should pay close attention to thickness and load capacity, as KALLAX requires shelves that can hold relatively heavy items.

Another advantage of ready-made replacements is that they are often cheaper than originals, but less “made for IKEA.” So the trade-off should be carefully considered. Personally, I would first contact IKEA customer service and then compare specialized online suppliers.

You can reorder KALLAX shelves directly from IKEA.

If original parts are not available, have MDF boards cut to size at a woodworking supply store.

It is best to use melamine resin boards to ensure a similar surface and maintain the stability of the shelves.

Where can you buy KALLAX shelves afterward?

Oh, I had the same question recently! Here’s a great tip: I was advised in a forum to ask directly at IKEA in the store. They actually had some leftover shelves they sold me. Just ask nicely at customer service—sometimes they have unexpected options.

Also, I found some sets for a good price on local classified ads like eBay Classifieds. 🙂 It’s definitely worth it, even if it takes a bit of patience.

And last but not least: MDF boards from hardware stores are great if you’re handy. Just paint them and install—they work well and save money.

Fingers crossed it works out just as well for you! 🙂
